As Major League Baseball celebrates Jackie Robinson and his pioneering contributions to the game, I can’t help but think about the fact that the league is reporting a historically low number of Black American players in its ranks: only 6%.
I think this is a teachable moment at a time when diversity efforts across various arenas (no pun intended) have come under attack. Major League Baseball, unfortunately, is a prime example of what it looks like to talk the talk without always walking the walk.

Professional baseball requires a MAN to try to hit a ball with junk on it travelling 95mph. Only a few in the world can do it more than 30% of the time.
It is not a place for diversity hires.

Why do racists expect blacks to be over-represented in baseball?
In 2023, whites constituted 60 percent, Hispanics 30 percent, blacks 6 percent, and Asians and others 4 percent. Considering MLB draws from about half the world, I’m not sure blacks are underrepresented.
The percent white has hardly changed since the mid 1980s. The percent other than white has changed substantially, shifting from black to Hispanic and now a little bit to Asian. These changes among the other than white mostly reflect the entry of foreign players.
The last time I looked, nobody was holding any body back. No chains binding anybody’s feet. Indeed, baseball is kind of a funny team sport, with most of the players staying quite a distance away from each other. Except every now and then, you get a double play or maybe a pitcher covering first base. But, to show you how smart we human beings are - and it’s really kind of amazing - did you ever see an outfielder take off for a fly ball right when it’s off the bat.
These racial things change. There was a time, Italians seemed to dominate baseball. Also boxing. And, a time when college kids dominated track and field, and Jewish kids dominated basketball. There was a time, a long time ago, when blacks and Irish dominated horse racing. There’s a lot of history jammed packed into this still young country. Better enjoy it before the anti-Americans flush it all down the toilet.
I think Major League Baseball players are required to pass a swimming test.
I’m sure they’ll get rid of that requirement next.

Imagine a professional baseball team wanting to hire the best players they can regardless of skin color. Makes no sense I tell ya.

Big time sports- at least the on field actors have been and always will be chosen by meritocracy. As woke as an organization is , if black kids are arent playing good ball, theyll be riding the pines in the minors. If they tear up AAA theyll get their chance to prove themselves in the pros. And thats the way it should be.
MLB became a Latino dominated sport about 15 years ago. It was the media that ran the story and all the outlets picked up on it and ran with it for about a week. White and Black players were getting beat out at every position by Latinos.
And the decline of WHITE American NBA players is fine?

The problem with 12.7 is a good percentage of MLB players are foreign. What percentage of the US players are from the US? If half then 6% is really 12% of US players.

Yeah but i guess my point is that only the truly talented gifted can really make it big to the point of millions of $$ a year- easier for the majority,of black folks now to go into rap or hip hop- but I guess even there it’s a crap shoot depending on who they know and ehat they can do for,them.
Well it ain’t like there on drugs or anything huh.
I’m not too deep in this issue I dropped major league baseball when they knelt, painted BLM in large letters on the back of the mound and honored drag queen nuns.
If I were in a community that was poor and din’t donate to other causes, I might go donate money to the local little league or boys and girls club and let the kids pick their sports.
