I am old enough to remember the call of the fight between Archie Moore and Rocky Marciano. Marciano was knocked down only once in his career. Moore did it, and I was listening to it on the radio. The announcer said the same thing as Howard Cosell said many years later.

I can still hear it: Marciano is down! Marciano is down! Marciano is down! It was great.

Of course, Marciano got up and knocked Archie out. But I can still hear it. I can still hear it... Marciano is down!

Was that Marciano fight in 1952 or thereabouts? I remember hearing a heavy weight championship then while in a rural area of Louisiana on a hot nite on the radio. Divine memory. Professional boxing. Eesh. All the atmosphere and seemliness of a slave auction. They put the announcers in tuxedoes to try to give blood lust elegance, and pretend the participants aren't risking (and receiving) permanent brain damage.

Mandate headgear for all bouts and let's see how popular this "sport" remains. (No different from mandating HANS devices in NASCAR.)

Yea 1952-53 or thereabouts. I was about 9-10 or so. I can still remember it though. It was a great fight.

Those guys that called fights back then were good. They really knew how to make you feel you were there.
