It's more than the funny elongated shape and the stubby legs that makes people stop on the sidewalk to smile and point -- something deeper.

As the owners of Ginger, a 10-year-old reddish-brown dachsie, my wife Julie and I know this in our hearts. But on Sunday we decided to go with Ginger to the Dachshund Fiesta in Washington Square Park to gather more answers in the company of 200-odd dogs and the humans who love them.

Waldo always barks at drag queens," Patrick said.

I wonder if you can train them to do that.

Just what is it about dachshunds? It's more than the funny elongated shape and the stubby legs that makes people stop on the sidewalk to smile and point -- something deeper.

I thought this was going to be an article about Daschle!

Have you seen that Sprint commercial with the herd of dachshund instead of oxen? It's adorable.

I loved that commercial! I guess it's been pulled, since I haven't seen it for awhile...Too bad. Terminex has a commercial out in which a family tries to avoid termites by living in a giant igloo. The spot has a brief shot of a dachshund in a coat coming running for his supper. And there's that one for plumbing (I think) that has a red smooth swimming or floating through a flooded apartment .

I saw that. The dog was so cute. I'm a sucker for a commercial with animals. My younger brother used to have a dachshund. He was smart as a whip, a little cranky, and very adventurous. He enjoyed a long and happy life, and left a lot of wonderful memories.

Note expression on victim's face:

LOL! Looks kind of resigned, doesn't she? (I hope it's a she!)

I tried putting a sweater on my dog this winter during some of the coldest weather...but she decided she preferred cold and naked to wearing THAT thing. Besides, there's always the option of burying herself in my bed...

They are still better than cat owners so they have that going for them.

Have you met many dachshunds? They may be small, but they aren't toys like some small breeds.

And considering how stubborn, naughty and ornery they can be, I'd say it's a good thing they ARE small. I can't imagine dealing with a sixty pound dog with dachshund attitude.

I do love some of the bigger breeds, though...if I ever get a house with a decent amount of land, I'll probably get another Lab.
