On the Ides of March, on the eve of war she posted a message on the internet. Her post was hidden in an obscure section of a popular news forum (Free Republic) in a section called Health/Medicine.
The Health/Medicine section had seen only seven threads in the previous week. But within 72 hours Mother Abigail transformed Free Republic into SARS Central.
She posted virtually nonstop for eleven days (March 15 - March 26), said good-bye - and changed the way breaking news is handled in our modern age forever.
TOPICS: Miscellaneous
KEYWORDS: sars
This now begins my rough draft. From this central location I will branch into a number of other threads that will deal with:
1. Various aspects of my (being created here before us) article on the Dissemination of Breaking News in the Digital Age.
2. The work, message and effects of Mother Abigail's campaign on SARS.
3. Interviews, resources and all the little minutia necessary to understand an event and chronicle it for others.

From this central location I will branch into a number of other threads I'll bet not.

I'm not sure I understand your comment?
If possible I hope to keep this thread focused on the macro issue of how digital tools have bypassed the talking heads, and given real power to independent news.
To: WordMerchant
Have you checked out leadpenny's Columbia crash thread? It was mentioned in several major media outlets as illustrative of "the Dissemination of Breaking News in the Digital Age".

Can somebody explain why Wordmerchant's account has been banned? I am mystified by what is going on on this thread.
However, for what it's worth, I consider Mother Abigail's work invaluable.
To: aristeides
Don't know either. Ping me if you find out.

Got that right...someone was trolling.

I can only speculate that he thought his work did not belong in chat, and ultimately he forgot his presence here was a matter of hospitality, and not birthright.

I enjoyed the rapport that we had with Mother Abigail. It was pleasant to have repeated knowledgable postings with her and have the benefit of her insight. Thanks Abigail.

Wordmerchant was/is right: FR is the best place on the web for SARS info, and was from the very beginning.

Same here.
However, for what it's worth, I consider Mother Abigail's work invaluable.
So do I.

The moderators want a news article with a source. Even Mother Abigails precognition was moved to chat. Also, It may have something to do with all the others (MadIvan, July4th, Destro, lessismore, timesink, bonesmccoy, domestic, etc.) posting SARS information before MA. Im surprised my SARS Threads didnt get moved to chat.

Maybe everyone is forgetting the
rules.
Don't play games - Don't represent yourself as another person, create or use another screen name to avoid a revocation of posting privileges, misrepresent the site or your role in it, and don't misattribute a contribution you've made. (Parody exceptions would apply to the latter, of course, but it should be clear what you are doing.)

Abigail I was very honored to find that you quoted my work.
I see that you continued with your theme of precognition.
What a unique and lovely Curriculum Vitae you have compiled.
I am envious.
And of course I will always love you.

FUTURES
STRANGE ATTRACTORS
All species are subject to cycles of sustained growth and sudden calamity. It is a rhythm as old as life itself, and is an integral part of the evolutionary process.
The classical symptoms of a species in crisis include:
Increased aggression
Sexual dysfunction
And disease.
VARIABLES
Is the AIDS virus increasing or decreasing its spread into the human species?
How many people who contract AIDS get well?
Ideals, Dreams, And cherished hopes rise within us only to meet the horrible truth. And be shattered.
