CHICAGO -- Chicago Cubs rookie Hee Seop Choi had to be taken from the field on a stretcher after hitting his head on the dirt following a collision with teammate Kerry Wood in the fourth inning of Saturday's game against the New York Yankees.
An early report from Illinois Masonic Hospital on Choi is that he is conscious and moving.
Choi and Wood, the Cubs' starting pitcher, crashed into each other chasing a popup by Jason Giambi in the fourth inning. Wood hit Choi with his left hand, his glove hand, and then Choi fell backward, hitting his head flush on the hard base path on the third-base line. He lie motionless -- but held into the ball.
His teammates stood around him as he lie still for about eight minutes on the field and the medical staff attended to him. Choi was fitted with a neck brace and placed on a stretcher. An ambulance entered Wrigley Field from the right-field corner to take him to the hospital.
The sellout crowd chanted "Hee Seop Choi, Hee Seop Choi" as he was moved from the field into the ambulance.
Choi, 24, the first Korean position player to reach the big leagues, entered the game batting .246 with seven home runs and 22 RBIs. He was named the National League Rookie of the Month for April.

"The sellout crowd chanted "Hee Seop Choi, Hee Seop Choi"..."
That's one hell of a feat for a crowd to be attempting after four innings of beer.
Seeing Sammy running out to Right, and hearing the crowd
made me feel good. It sure was stupid of him, using the wrong bat...
Ambulances on the field aren't a pretty site. Sam, they were cheering in the heads too, in fact it was a lousy time to visit, everyone had the same idea. :>)
Which is more than you can say about the Chicago Cubs as a whole most of the time. Oh, well, I guess every team is entitled to a bad century or two.
Sammy is a cheater and a disgrace to both baseball and town of Chicago. The Frib-une should have traded his sorry rear end to a New York team right after the the crap hit the fan
