Death Row Dog's Deadline Delayed
Judge Gives Porter The Dog 20-Day Reprieve
POSTED: 6:28 p.m. EDT June 18, 2003
WOODSTOCK, N.H. -- Porter, the dog sentenced to die for biting a cow last year, got another 20-day reprieve Wednesday from a Woodstock, N.H., judge.
Judge Alan Cook encouraged the two sides to sit down and look at possible compromises. John Campbell, the lawyer for Porter's owner, Susan Shepard, said he saw a possible solution in Montpelier.
Campbell, who is also a state senator, has started the process for a new draft of the statute under which Porter was sentenced. Campbell says the draft will be ready for the next legislative session and he hopes that is a compromise to which the town of Hartland might agree.
"I would assume that we will be getting together to discuss a possible solution short of the final solution -- that being the death of Porter," Campbell said.
Shepard was also optimistic about the latest ruling keeping her dog alive.
"I feel like it was fairly positive. I mean, (it's) another 20 days. I guess I keep counting by 20 days now. But I feel like the judge seemed positive in the case," Shepard said.
The lawyer for the town of Hartland, Rob Manby, said his greatest fear was that the town could be held accountable if the dog were allowed to live and then bit something, or someone, else. Have a comment about this story? E-mail our newsroom.
