August 2003 was the worst month for computer viruses in history, anti-virus company Central Command, Inc. said Tuesday as it announced the month's top viruses and worms. Not surprisingly, the Sobig.F worm topped the company's “Dirty Dozen” list, accounting for 76.8 percent of confirmed infections. Adding to Sobig.F's standout nature was the sheer number of e-mails the worm generated. At the height of its spread, Sobig was responsible for 73 percent of all e-mail traffic, Central Command said.

Persistent, earlier versions of Sobig also showed on the chart, but they were responsible for only 1.5 percent of confirmed infections.

The Blaster worm (Lovsan.A) came in second, tallying 6.4 percent of confirmed infections.

Central Command's complete list of August's Top 12 Viruses, with percentage of total confirmed infections:

1. Worm/Sobig.F 76.8%

2. Worm/Lovsan.A (Blaster) 6.4%

3. Worm/MiMail.A 5.1%

4. Worm/Nachi.A 4.0%

5. Worm/Klez.E (including G) 2.1%

6. Worm/Dumaru.A 2.0%

7. Worm/Sobig.A 0.9%

8. Worm/BugBear.B 0.7%

9. W32/Sircam.A 0.6%

10. Worm/Yaha.E 0.5%

11. Worm/Sobig.C 0.4%

12. Worm/Sobig.E 0.2%
