I read that Bush won the district. That says something, but not all that much. Bush won West Virginia too, but anybody who's challenging Robert Byrd isn't going to win. Sad but true.

I was looking for things like how long has the D been there, how recently was an R from this district, how big has the D won his elections, and other things.

The D in Winter's (my) district is Representative Darlene Hooley, who the press loves. I've voted for her in the past, but next time I will vote for Winter's Republican primary opponent. I've seen her make too many bad legislative decisions.

Hooley hasn't been there that long---I think she was first elected in 1998. Before her, there was a liberal Democrat who somehow was able to hold on to the seat for years. The rural areas in the district are traditionally Democrat, and the college town of Corvallis is extremely liberal, but the Salem area and the Portland suburbs are Republican. If Winters can get the usual GOP margins in the suburbs, run as well as one would expect a state senator from Salem to run in the Salem area and tread water in the rural areas (where her NRA endorsement will help), she should defeat Hooley.
