I wouldn't be surprised for this district to fall to the 'Rats.

Shays, for all his faults, does support Bush's foreign policy.

Here in Connecticut it's getting harder to distinguish between the Reps and the Dems or more appropriately what Republican party?

Sh_t - HE's the next-worst-thing to a 'rat NOW (speaking as one of his constituents who doesn't get phone calls or emails answered, BUT does get all his bullsh_t junkmail).

He does next to NOTHING for us now, is only elected to keep a definite democrat out of the job, f_cks-around in front of every tv camera he finds, and people pray against his health.

There are only a handful of Republicans I'd like to see out of office, but Shays is one of 'em. He's just too damned liberal. And if indeed he does support W's foreign policy, he's still exactly the kind of person who is likely to abandon it when the going gets tough.

Yeah, but doesn't he still vote for Hastert as Speaker?

So long as he caucases with the GOP, then he is preferable to a Democrat who will be at least as liberal as him.

Probably the same results as the last election. On one hand, the Democratic voters who only vote in Presidential elections will be staying home this time, and on the other hand some Republicans will desert Mr. Shays and leave it blank. This is of course if there is no other Candidate that is more Conservative than he is. (Libertarian, Constitution)

If we were down to 225 seats or fewer, I'd readily agree with you. Everyone is assuming the GOP will keep the House, and right now there is no reason to think otherwise.

I suspect that if Shays had the determining (218th) vote, he might well vote for a Rat.

Won't happen. They have been trying to beat Shays forever. Every year they say they are gonna do it, and they never do.

He'll also be helped by Jodi Rell, who is going to win in a landslide.

What evidence that he might vote for a Rat for speaker?

The fact that he has such a liberal voting record.

"I wouldn't be surprised for this district to fall to the 'Rats."

Shays is a liberal-to-moderate Republican (I'm being charitable) in a district that is, by Northeast standards (not to mention New England standards), quite Republican. The district gave Bush 43% in 2000 and 46% in 2004, so all Shays needs to win is get 4% from Kerry's 53% in the district (i.e., 7.5% of Kerry's voters). A Democrat winning this seat in a congressional race would be the equivalent of a Republican beating a moderate-to-conservative Southern Democrat Congressman in a district in which Kerry got 46% in 2004, such as John Tanner's 8th CD in West TN, Allen Boyd's 2nd CD in North FL, and Sanford Bishop's 2nd CD in SW GA (guys who usually win with over 60%); it is much easier said than done. Shays will survive.

Yes, but she has no interest in running for Congress.
