Illegal immigration was the core issue at the Utah Republican Convention on Saturday that hurled 10-year veteran Congressman Chris Cannon into a June primary election with political novice John Jacob.
"Immigration is huge with the delegates," Jacob said after a runoff ballot gave him 52 percent of the vote to Cannon's 48 percent. "Chris Cannon tells them, 'I'm tough on illegal immigration - look at my record.' Well, his record does not show that."
Americans want a change, said Jacob, an Eagle Mountain business owner. But they don't want Democrats. "These delegates sent a message to Washington, D.C., that we will replace a Republican with a Republican, if necessary."

If Jacob actually unseats Cannon in the primary, it would be a powerful message that Americans are serious about border security and want serious solutions.
Thats the way to do it - strong primary challenges for candidates who can win.
"Thats the way to do it - strong primary challenges for candidates who can win."
Very well-put. Hopefully, there will be more to come.
John Jacob Jingle-hymer-Schmidt
His name is my name too..........
(sorry, I couldn't pass it up.) :)
LOL--funny!
Hopefully, John Jacob will soon be known as "Congressman."
IOW, we'll Throw the Bums out. Good for them! And D.C. had better be listening. Scare tactics aren't going to work, and I'm not going to shut up while arrogant elites in D.C. shove something that will harm my country down my throat and expect me to eat it. If that's their attitude they'll be lucky to be allowed to pack a suitcase before I toss the bums and I don't give a damn what party they represent.
"Obviously, there's a lot of unhappiness in America with the government, and we are seeing it here," Cannon said, acknowledging convention upset. "We had a whole lot of people who didn't show up because they didn't take my opponents seriously."
No, you had a whole lot of people that took your opponent seriously and took you seriously, and that's why you were thrown overboard.
"The present system is broken. It's a failed federal policy," he said. "We need a comprehensive approach, but first we have to fix our borders."
Oh, now McCainaic who teamed with ted kennedy to provide amnesty and wealth to lawbreakers thinks he can preach on security and be believed? be glad they weren't voting on whether to keep you, you'd have been tossed from office Maverick. As it was they tossed your chosen one.
"Comprehensive approach" is nothing but code for amnesty. Hit the pike McCain.
John has run a pretty darned smart campaign, actually.
Few things political would make me happier this year than to see Cannon go down to defeat.
He's a slimy, arrogant Open Borders puke.
It won't happen. It's just that the hardcore nutjobs are willing to go to an essentially meaningless party event while everyday folks aren't.
He'll win by 30pts in the primary.
Cannon won his 2004 primary with 58% of the vote. Why do you think he'll run stronger this time around?
Remember, there isn't a gubernatorial primary in 2006 to bring people to the polls, so the primary will still be dominated by conservatives -- "hardcore nutjobs", as you call them.
That's a comforting thought. Hopfully, southern Utah Freepers will lead the way.
If you or your family members live in southern Utah, this is very important.
If anyone is running a Utah politics list I would appreciate being added.
There is none yet. I'm not from Utah or particularly knowlegable about Utah politics, but I'll start running a John Jacob ping list.
The primary is on June 27. Freepers from southern Utah--VOTE FOR JOHN JACOB!!!!
Jacob is trying do the job that Cannon won't do.
At least, the nut case Merril Cook is a non-entity in the race.
Question: This might sound really simple, but Im not from the US. I've heard GOP associated with the Republican party, but what exactly is GOP? Presumably an acronym of some kind?
It's an acronym of Grand Old Party, which is a nickname the Republican Party has had since the late 1800's.
Ah hah! Thats cool. Thanks very much.
If we are to change the politics of immigration in Congress, we need to defeat an incumbent on this issue.
Conservative southern Utah should present a good opportunity for this. But you need a powerhouse candidate, AND everyone on our side of the issue working their butts off. We've run at Cannon in the primary before and not come close to beating him. If I'm not mistaken, we've also beaten him at a convention before, and it meant nothing. Until I see some evidence to the contrary, I will pay zero attention to this race.
It does no good to get people's hopes up if they will only be dashed. If the truth is that even voters in Republican primaries in conservative districts are apathetic and stupid, then better to know the truth, understand it, and deal with its "root causes."
