Tramm Hudson (candidate to succeed Katherine Harris) calls for securing borders
Tramm Hudson for Congress ^

Posted on 08/04/2006 5:52:26 PM PDT by Clintonfatigued

First and foremost, we must secure our borders and stem the tide of illegal border crossings. Only when our borders are secure can we begin to deal the issue of those already here.

To secure the border we must fully fund the border patrol and all customs and immigration services. They are the first line of defense along our borders and must have the agents and resources to perform effectively. They should be supported with military assets such as drones and satellites if necessary. Only with a strong border patrol can we hope to stop the stampede of illegal border crossings.

For many years, we have used a “catch and release” policy in which we detained and released illegal aliens and expected them to show up for a court date. We must change this to a policy of “catch and return.” Those considering crossing the border illegally must know that if they are caught, they will be returned to their home country quickly—and never allowed to return as a citizen. To expect one who has broken the law once by entering the country illegally to honor a court order is both naïve and dangerous.

I don't buy it. First he says:
I oppose any form of amnesty for the estimated 11 million illegal aliens already here in the country.
But then he says:
However, deporting eleven million people is a daunting task and one that would require an unprecedented expansion of government. Instead, we should document those here, make them pay a fine for entering the country illegally, pay back taxes, and teach them English as well as American history, and assimilate them into our culture.
Sounds very Kennedy-McCain. This policy would in 20 years lead us right back to where where are today.

HUDSON SURGES INTO THE LEAD IN LATEST POLL

Message of Honor and Integrity Resonating As Voters See a Choice

August 7, 2006- (Sarasota, FL) - A new poll conducted by the Tarrance Group (see Poll Results Memo attached to the end of this release) shows Tramm Hudson surging to a 12-point lead in the District 13 Republican primary. Hudson reacted to the latest numbers with the following statement:

“As voters begin to see and hear from more than one candidate, our message of restoring honor and integrity to Congress, of returning fiscal discipline to our budgets, and reviving the spirit of Ronald Reagan, is truly resonating.”

Campaign Manager Fred Piccolo Jr. said of the latest numbers, “It is clear from the poll and, more importantly, talking with real voters in our extensive grassroots campaign, that Tramm has momentum. Our area clearly wants someone in Congress who has, throughout his life, demonstrated a record of integrity, honesty, and who will work to reform Congress. That person is Tramm Hudson and the more voters hear from the candidates, the more they agree.”

Tramm Hudson is running for Congress in the 13th Congressional District.

MEMORANDUM

RE: KEY FINDINGS FROM A SURVEY OF LIKELY REPUBLICAN PRIMARY VOTERS IN THIRTEENTH CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT OF FLORIDA

DATE: AUGUST 4, 2006

________________________________________________________________________

The Tarrance Group is pleased to present the Hudson for Congress Committee with the key findings from a survey of voter attitudes among likely Republican primary voters in the Thirteenth Congressional District of Florida. These key findings are based on telephone interviews with N=300 “likely” Republican primary voters throughout the district. Responses to this survey were gathered August 2-3, 2006, and the confidence interval associated with a sample of this type is + 5.8%.

KEY FINDINGS

- Tramm Hudson has surged ahead to take the lead in the Republican primary election for Congress in the Thirteenth Congressional District of Florida, and now leads by twelve points.

- Thirty-five percent (35%) of likely Republican primary voters indicate they would vote for Hudson, while Vern Buchanan currently receives twenty-three percent (23%) of the vote. Nancy Detert receives ten percent (10%) of the vote on this primary ballot test, while Mark Flanagan captures 8% of the vote, and seven percent (7%) indicate they would vote for Donna Clarke. Eighteen percent (18%) of Republican primary voters indicate they are undecided.

- Hudson’s advantage on this trial primary ballot test is decisive throughout the district, as he leads Buchanan by 10 points among Republicans in the Sarasota County portion of the district and by 14 points among Republicans in the Manatee County portion of the district.

- Tramm Hudson also now has the strongest image ratings of any of the candidates running in the Republican primary election. Hudson’s favorable rating is six points higher than Vern Buchanan’s favorable rating among Republicans.

- More importantly, Tramm Hudson stands with a much stronger overall favorable to unfavorable ratio. Hudson’s favorable to unfavorable ratio is five to one (5:1), as compared to Buchanan’s favorable to unfavorable ratio of only two to one (2:1.)

Thansk Julie, I just wish I could get behind Tramm. He
is a really nice guy. I've seen and heard him on a number
of occasions. My problem with him is he seems too nice.
We don't need another nice guy being pushed around in the House.

I will support him if he beats out Vern, but until then I have to go with Buchanan.

Tramm Hudson has been in the trenches working to strengthen the county GOP for years. Recently Vern showed up with his checkbook but should he be the nominee, his many unusual business arrangements may provide fodder for the local liberal rag to attack.

As a former banker , Hudson is the best one to oppose the likely Dem candidate Jennings who is also a banker.

Sure Tramm is a 'nice guy' but he's also smart, determined and has integrity and politically savvy.....I know him and I believe he'll represent the 13th district very well.

I sure as heck hope so. I'm just a little leary he might
get stepped on by the established dems in DC.

I have had an on going campaign against Jan Schnieder, I went
by her office this week, on 41 near Ringling Museum, and
I recognized the building she is in, the old womens abortion clinic.
That fits her to a tee. When I realized what the building
was, I laughed so hard I almost drove off the road.

Schneider in the former abortion clinic building....how appropriate!

Re: Tramm....Believe me....he won't get stepped on in Congress. He has the same political savvy to get the job done similar to Dan Miller who gave his early endorsement to Tramm.

Awesome Article. I just hope that Tramm being a racist isn't a reflection of the rest of views of the district. He will be slaughtered in Congress!

Welcome to the DEEP SOUTH, lol!

Tramm is not a racist. His remarks should to be viewed in context.

I have read the entire transcript and his main point had to do with the importance of having Chaplins in the military.

It's too bad he didn't just say 'one soldier' couldn't swim....etc.

Tramm has done much good for the Black community in Sarasota and he has many friends there.....they are standing with him and I believe he'll survive this unfortunate mistake.

Byrd said 'white nigger' on National TV and the media ignored it.....In the double standard....Democrats can do no wrong and Republicans are always vunerable to being called racist.

Here's the transcript of his entire response to the question:

"1984 we were in Panama. Our unit was doing a two-week training down there. I commanded an infantry company and we were practicing crossing a river. You know, an infantry company has 140 some-odd soldiers. A large number were black. I grew up in Alabama and I understand and I know this from my own experiences that blacks aren’t the best swimmers or may not even know how to swim. But we were crossing this and wanted to make sure every soldier could swim and if they couldn’t we’d get them across the river. We had the line across the river and we were making our passage way and one of the black soldiers with his ruck-sack on his back, his weapon and fell from the line…he let go. Sunk down to the bottom of the river.

"And I’ve got to tell you, it took my breath away. Two of the sergeants manning the boats immediately jumped into the river and pulled that soldier out form below. They gave him mouth-to-mouth resuscitations and we called in a medivac helicopter to take him to the hospital.

"That soldier could have died. I believe it was divine intervention. That was a Saturday afternoon. And that next morning we had a worship service among our NCOs and our officers. And I led that worship service.

"And I think, in terms of answering your question that if we allow congress or the federal government to remove that from the chaplain’s core that would be just terrible. And I believe that being able to worship and to express our religious beliefs if it’s in the military, so be it. Or if it’s alone as individuals, you would find me defending that. I’ll just pass this around because this was manifold when I read about the law that someone was trying to pass."

Locals respond to Hudson's remark:
Reactions To The Truncated Video Released by the Buchanan Campaign - Campaign Official Statement Below:

"I have known Tramm Hudson for over 20 years. Our sons attended school together and we have worked together on many community projects. I am aware of the video of Tramm’s comments some months ago. I have viewed the tape in its entirety and I do not find it offensive in any way. I believe that anyone who views the tape with an open mind will draw the same conclusion.

From my years of work in the Civil Rights era, I know the challenges that black Americans faced. Because of a lack of opportunity, especially in the Southern states, many black people learned to swim later in life or not at all. Even in Sarasota County, we demonstrated in the 1950s and 1960s to use the local beaches. When the Sunshine Skyway opened, the south beach was for black people and the north side for whites. This demonstrates the distance we have come in our community over the past 50 years.

I think this little snippet taken out of context of an entire speech is ‘much ado about nothing.’ I believe it to be a campaign ploy. Tramm Hudson has and continues to be a friend of mine and a business and community leader who I respect."

- Dr. Ed James - Longtime Civil Rights Activist

"I have known Tramm Hudson for many years and I have seen the entire video of his remarks to the Christian Coalition. I do not consider what he said to be a racist remark. Tramm has apologized to me in person, although I don't think one is necessary, but I accept his apology without reservation. He is a good, decent, family man with a good heart"

- Trevor Harvey, President NAACP of Sarasota County

"I've known Tramm Hudson for over 5 years, I lead an interracial Bible study that Tramm has participated in these past 5 years. I know Tramm and I know Tramm is a good, honest man who treats everyone fairly. I have seen Tramm's entire statement and believe he was attempting to
express something that just came out wrong. I accept his apology and value his friendship."

- Pastor Kelvin Lumpkin - Abundant Life Ministries

Read Redstate.com's reaction to Tramm's apology. "By all accounts Tramm Hudson is a decent and nice person and a heck of a businessman...Well done Mr. Hudson. It's nice to know there is a candidate out there who will not try to back peddle from mistakes, but takes ownership and apologizes."
