The withdrawal of Anne Evans Estabrook as a candidate for the United States Senate makes State Sen. Joseph Pennacchio the clear front runner in the race to take on Frank Lautenberg in November. Pennacchio has already won contests in Hunterdon and Union, and seems poised to win the organization line in Bergen County tomorrow night. Insiders predict that he will also have the line in Ocean, Essex and Passaic counties. His lone opponent is Murray Sabrin, a Ramapo College professor and the leader of Ron Pauls New Jersey presidential campaign.

Jersey Joe is the man- to defeat Lautencadaver, that is. The GOP (both state & national) needs to quit looking for a RINO to run.
There was only one Jersey Joe (Walcott), and he’s no longer with us.
The owners and 2 of the writers for the politickernj racket have long running personal animosities for Murray Sabrin. We’re talking about stand up shouting matches at political meetings and donor events.
I’m still sure Pennachio will win the primary, but Sabrin can easily pull in 12% of the state R primary vote without spending a single campaign dollar, so he does have a solid base to work from, especially the Ron Paul organizers, Bret Schundler’s campaign staff, Arab-American Republicans, Jewish Republicans, and financial industry types in NJ.
Should be a good primary fight and should sharpen Pennachio’s speechifying and debating abilities to get him air time and exposure.
Bret Schundler’s campaign staff? Schundler endorsed Pennachio.
Schundler endorsed Pennachio, but some key people from Schundler’s gubernatorial campaign signed on with Sabrin.
Pennachio is probably known as “Jersey Joe” because he was called that in a creative campaign song last year, a parody of song poularized in the early 1940s about “Joltin’ Joe DiMaggio.”
OK, I’ve heard about “Jersey Joe” Walcott; he was a heavyweight champion - briefly - but he never copyrighted that nickname. So don’t get too bent out of shape about it.
