A Nice Synopsis of Conservatism by Glenn Beck
CNN Headline News ^ | 6/26/08 | Constitution's Grandchild

NEW YORK (CNN) -- A lot of people don't believe it, but the truth is that I really don't know whom I'm going to vote for this November. It won't be Barack Obama -- he and I simply disagree on too many fundamental issues -- but it also may not be John McCain.

I though this article sums up nicely the angst and conflicted feelings of many of us. The Democrats are thinking about writing in candidates, staying home or voting for Senator McCain. Republicans are thinking about writing in candidates, staying home or voting Senator Obama. All in all the country is saying, "How come, no matter HOW we try, we can't find a candidate who totally represents our values and agenda for this nation. As Mr. Beck points out, this isn't "Survivor" or "American Idol". We don't have to be stuck with whoever survives the backstabbing and isn't voted off the island or the show. So, how do we handle imperfect candidates in an imperfect world? I've come to the conclusion there is no perfect answer, either.

For conservatives, it comes down to whether you can get Comrade Juan McNuts’ finger out of your eye long enough to see the ballot, swallow your principles, and vote for the lesser evil.

Below is from George Washington’s Farewell Address!

Warns against the party system.
“It serves to distract the Public Councils, and enfeeble
the Public Administration....

agitates the Community with ill-founded jealousies and
false alarms; kindles the animosity of one against another....
it opens the door to foreign influence and corruption...
thus the policy and the will of one country are subjected
to the policy and will of another.”

You are assuming that politicians act in our best interests. They don't.

As you know, our ballots only have a check mark box next to each candidate's name - you either check mark it or leave it blank.

Wouldn't it be nice if instead there were two boxes next to each - one for yea, one for nae - so we can not just 'not vote' for a candidate, but reject them.

Imagine if both candidates were soundly rejected!

It would be nice to get a tally for each - yeas and nae's, subtract the yeas from the nae's for each and what's left is what's left.

Er, hopefully what's left is Right...

I know, my household has the same view. Husband is tirelessly drumming up support for “conservatives” running for the House and Senate. That's where participatory democracy must make it's mark. He is on cloud 9 with Jason Chaffetz’ win of the Republican nomination in Utah. He's pushing hard for Beaty’s candidacy in Massachusetts. We are both strongly in support of Bob Onder in Missouri. We have to participate and support those candidates we can.

As to POTUS, I pray nightly that God will give us the leadership we need — not the leadership we deserve. I will not vote for pro-abortion candidates. I will not vote for a candidate who obfuscates the issues. I will not trust my party to vet the candidates as to principles and character. I reserve that right.

We, as Americans, cannot leave the leadership of this nation to those whose self-interests prohibit the self-policing of that body. It is up to each of us to stay aware, vigilant and vocal.

At the end of the day, if the official we elect refuses to represent our interests, we should retire them with our thanks for their efforts and send someone else to give it a try.

I think the reality of Obama’s agenda is farther left than we’ve seen in a very long time.

For all of Bill Clinton’s problems, I don’t think he was a true believer in much of anything. He could just as easily have acted Republican. The only reason he was a democrat, IMO, is that Arkansas was essentially a one party state and that was his path to power. If his path to power was in the GOP, he would have belted out that song as well. Of course, the personal issues would have derailed his career a lot earlier in the GOP...but aside from that aspect, I don’t think Bill Clinton really has true believer opinions on much of anything.

The kindest thing I can say of Senator Obama, from what I know at present, is that he needs to serve the State of Illinois at the national level for a few more years. We will get a better idea of his voting record, his beliefs and his growth as a leader.

The unkindest thing I can say about Senator Obama is that any human being who could vote against giving medical assistance to children who survive abortion attempts and allow them to gasp out their last in a bedpan in a broom closet just doesn't have what it takes to be my president.

To me, that no vote relegates all other positions he may have to date irrelevant. I say that with all the civility I can muster, and it is not predicated on any other factor than his character.

Actually thats not true.. McLaim is saying whatever the base wants to hear, one day one thing the next something else... Its a matter of whether they believe him or not.. Some do.. or want to.. some do not.. Any that would believe anything this weasle says just fell off the turnip truck..

Even Neville Chamberlain would be embassed at what John McLaim could/would do... At lease poor old Neville had good intentions.. Mclaim is just a snitch.. probably been a snitch from his youth..

Agreed, was thinking about this last night. Would be great if there were a mechanism to flush and restart. Neither Obomba or Juan are presidential material or even leaders for that matter.

Sadly someone had to elect these knuckleheads. Doesnt say much for the folks back home pulling the ballot levers. Either theyre uninformed or equally corrupt.

You are certainly entitled to your opinion (believe me, we all cherish them), and I would never try to talk you out of yours.

Your response alludes to rumors that have been circulating about Senator McCain, if I read you correctly. I cannot speak to them, except to say the most highly decorated serviceman in the Vietnam era says they are not true. I wasn't there, I cannot make a decision.

I have my own issues with Senator McCain, as apparently does Mr. Beck. This was meant to address both sides of the aisle's summer of discontent, the possible reasons for it and solutions to it.

Vote your conscience which is, hopefully, formed by the desire to please God. I will survive whichever candidate is elected, hope for his/her safety and try to place others in office who can limit evil and promulgate grace and goodness. I will not vote for a candidate on the basis of soundbites, revisionist history, or the pandering of the moment. I hope the rest of Americans whether conservative or liberal will make that same commitment and not render a decision on the basis of anything less than a great deal of soul-searching. Too much is riding on our choice, as a weary, disgruntled world is telling us.

It comes down to the old “we KNOW what we will get with Obama, but there is an outside chance that McCain might, just might, do something to placate the Republican conservative base.” It leaves us conservatives with no choice but to vote AGAINST Obama, which does not equate to voting FOR McCain.

Wherever your conscience leads you. It’s between you, God and the ballot box — it’s private.

Support any congressional candidates you can find. Support a vigorous debate of the issues, insist on having that or find a way to limit the danger. Like it, or not, the world is sick of politics as usual. They don’t think we are. We all need to give this election (and always should and should have) everything we’ve got to show a world this “grand experiment” can and will work as “one nation under God.”

I can’t make others act responsibly or civilly, but I can act that way. I can insist on the best and, if disappointed, offer my thanks and try again. I don’t have to add to the heat of the anger. I can ask for the best and highest and refuse to accept anything less. So, my dear friend, can you. And if we don’t get it — we can whine louder than anyone else. ;-) (I couldn’t resist).

I WANT to want to believe him. Unfortunately we have his track record to look at.....I’ve had enough knives between the shoulder blades with that mans’ fingerprints on them.

I really liked his thoughts on this issue. He seems a likable-enough fellow. He’s certainly gaining favor in many circles. I wish him continued success.
