Gibbs, Dailey still in limbo, provisional ballots to be tallied

Less than 200 votes place Bob Gibbs ahead of Fred Dailey for the Republican nomination in the 18th Congressional District, but the results could change as county boards of elections wait for provisional ballots and conduct an automatic recount.

According to the Ohio Secretary of State's Office, Gibbs is ahead in the election with 10,953 votes. Fred Dailey received 10,789 votes, a difference of 164 votes.

The winner will run against incumbent U.S. Rep. Zack Space, D-Dover.

"Provisional and absentees, as long as they were postmarked by the time, will be received up to 10 days after the election," said Kevin Kidder, media relations coordinator for Brunner's office.

Dailey said he believes there are still 1,000s of votes to be counted.

When Dailey went to bed Tuesday night he said he was up by about 164 votes and when he woke up Wednesday morning, he was down by the same amount.

"We just have to wait and see," Dailey said.

Gibbs said he is confident he has enough of a margin to win despite uncounted provisional ballots.

Regardless of whoever is the nominee, Zack Space came out ahead. That doesn’t guarantee that Space will be reelected, but none of the Republican candidates showed great strength politically.

The recount drags on and no official candidate. The lead has flipped a couple of times, but is now back to Gibbs up by about 160 votes. The outcome probably won’t be known until the end of the month.
