In my experience libs are often stuck in that "poor = moral purity; wealth = Marxist "you-took-that-from-someone-else" silliness. They think poor people are by definition good, so they're always bitching about the luxuries we have and patting themselves on the back for their deep empathy--meanwhile, they are quite safe saying all this because they think this stuff just APPEARS, and it won't REALLY go away.
I work with teenagers, and it's depressing sometimes!
Many Christian churches should share the blame for promoting this mentality, and for treating upward mobility as a sign of "pride." Just as bad are those of the Reverend Ike variety (I am dating myself here) that promote easy money schemes, however.
You would have been pleasantly surprised by the conversation a good Republican friend and I had with one of the lifeguards at the pool yesterday. He is just 19 and has spent the past year at UNC Chapel Hill which must be one of the most liberal places in the entire United States. He is very well informed and can see what Obama is in the process of doing to this country. My friend (whose son just completed his Junior year at the Citadel but is not returning) commented how much better the lifeguard can discuss the issues compared to her son whom she says has “no clue”.
