mccain was dropping fast in the polls and hayworth was moving up. Then Palin stepped in and mccain stopped looking back I don't think that's true. Hayworth made his closest run to McCain well after Palin's one visit and ad was cut (back in March, wasn't it?). McCain spending $20M on a primary is what made this such a blowout, not Palin.
