Nearly a week since the primaries, its still not clear whose name will be on the Republican line in a high-profile North Country Congressional race.
An initial tally of votes in the 23rd district put Matt Doheny ahead by more than 500 votes. Doug Hoffman, already on the Conservative line, says at least 1900 military and absentee ballots still need to be counted.
As Jonathan Brown reports, a final, certified vote count isn't expected until later this week.

New York ping
The most ominous part of this article is Doug Hoffman saying he’ll stay on the ballot as a third party nominee even if he loses the Republican nomination.
It’s clear that Hoffman has worn out his welcome and is not a good candidate, stands on the issues notwithstanding. He needs to go back to private business and leave politics.
Has Doheny indicated whether he would drop out as the Independence Party nominee if it turns out that Hoffman won the GOP primary? Hoffman isn’t the only NY-23 Republican who got himself a ballot line for the general election prior to the GOP primary.
Given that it’s likely that Doheny will be declared the winner (500 votes is quite a large number to make up with absentees in a congressional primary), he should announce as such and call on Hoffman to do the same.
By “announce as such” I mean announce that he would drop out as the Independence Party nominee if it turns out that Hoffman won the GOP primary.
I made that point a month or two ago on a related thread and got flamed mercilessly- that Doheny was a liberal, etc. Looks like I've been vindicated.
Hoffman is pro life, and pro family, and proud and unashamed of it, while I see no mention of Doheny’s stance on these basic and essential issues of life and liberty anywhere on his website.
NYS GOP party should pass a rule....they should make all candidates who run under the gop name sign a contract that they will NOT run as a third party candidate .....either that or they don't get gop money or help....
Hoffman for all the work that was done to support him, he sure has turned into a creep....
Lazio..Hoffman...Murkowsiky...Castle..Bloomberg....
the real change needed to happen in the dim party but instead the pub party implodes...(soros doing?)
now is the time for him to stand down....if he's a man, he'll do it....if he's a publicity goon, he'll elect the rat , who is far, far worse than his pub opponent....
Who cares if a socially liberal GOPer beats or loses to a socially liberal Dem? I don’t, but to each his own.
He has low charisma. That struck me the first time. Why do we give these types second shots?
Does that mean it’s OK for Hoffman to help the Democrat win the general election?
NOT winning that seat is a big loss for the pubs and for us...
or are you one of those who would rather lose everything just to make your stinking point?....
kind of like Rove....destroy a sound candidate because you're special guy didn't win....
and besides....I am more concerned now with a fiscal conservative, and no dim has ever tried to be fiscally conservative especially in the last two years.
I vote on the Life issue, period. Others may not, but I do.If you cannot stand up for the unborn, and be clear about it, then I don’t care what other sweet soothing words you are telling the public in order to get elected.
I have utterly no interest in merely seeing a Republican in power.
Karl Rove was saying exactly what you are saying, so I do not know why you are bringing him up. Vote for the party, and pragmatically, and demonize any one who upsets the ‘party’ getting into power.
And, if you really don’t care about the abortion issue so much, then tell me, where has voting pragmatically gotten you? What has your big tent done for America, and the conservative values that the GOP gives lip service to?
Stupidity is the reason bad candidates get second and third shots. (see Jim Oberweis, Illinois). In this case though the voters appeared to have rejected Hoffman.
so you contradict yourself...
plus, I'm not so sure that you might just be a bit too "concerned" about a pub when you really should be rallying against every single dim in the country...
Abortion isn’t a HEW issue, in the political sphere it’s an issue of violence against a human being, and beyond that, and even more importantly, God says babies are people, and I am with Him, and He wants abortion ended.
