Christie was unquestionably giving the politically correct, "Isn't insane that it's even a possibility?" response to the question about a Palin presidency. And that's exactly how the crowd and Fallon interpreted it.
That's fine, if that's his opinion. As I said, I like Christie very much, but he has a bit of that "nobody could possibly be as good for the job as me" personality. Same as Guiliani.
It's a good trait to have when you've got to beat down some unions or leftwing activists. But it might be limiting in the long term.
