It seems that the issue has become a moot point.

Al Qaeda confirms bin Laden death and vows revenge

Obama allowed al Qaeda to be able to choose if Osama bin Ladin was going to be a Martyr or the Islamist version of D. B. Cooper.

After Obama left the ball in their court, al Qaeda made their choice and Osama is now officially a Martyr.

A death photo would provide al Qaeda an object of veneration. Now that al Qaeda has chosen the Martyr route, it is best to deny it to them and I have to side with Obama's current position.

When I say "object of veneration", this is an historical exmple of what I mean:

The Blood Flag (Blutfahne)

The Blutfahne (Blood flag) was a Nazi Swastika flag which was used in the attempted Nazi Beer Hall Putsch in Munich, Germany on 9 November 1923 and one of the most revered objects of the German Nazi Party. The flag was actually that of the 5th SA Sturm that was covered in blood from members of the Nazi Party who had been shot by the Munich Police (primarily from party member Andreas Bauriedl who fell on top of the flag when he was shot and killed).
