Goaded by his rivals, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney has finally staked out his position on the controversial deal to raise the federal debt ceiling.
Perhaps not surprisingly, the GOP frontrunner opposes the plan and places the blame for the crisis squarely on the shoulders of U.S. President Barack Obama.
Color us stunned
As president, my plan would have produced a budget that was cut, capped and balanced not one that opens the door to higher taxes and puts defense cuts on the table, Romney said on Monday. President Obamas leadership failure has pushed the economy to the brink at the eleventh hour and 59th minute. While I appreciate the extraordinarily difficult situation President Obamas lack of leadership has placed Republican Members of Congress in, I personally cannot support this deal.
Translation?
After pulling an Obama and refusing to offer his own proposal for resolving the dispute, Romney is now blaming the president for a failure of leadership. Meanwhile, hes telling Republican members of Congress that if they feel the need to sell out again by supporting this plan (like they did during the shutdown debate), well thats fine by him.
Sheesh and this is the GOP standard-bearer?
Of course Romneys own failure to lead during the debt debate was shared by the vast majority of the GOP field which for the most part avoided the issue like the plague.
We credit U.S. Reps. Michele Bachmann (R-Minnesota) and Ron Paul (R-Texas) for sticking to their stated position of opposing any debt increase, while we credit Jon Huntsman for at least articulating a position (even if it was to support the weak ass compromise offered by House Speaker John Boehner).
But Romney? Rick Perry? Tim Pawlenty? Sarah Palin? Where were their voices on this issue? Why werent they offering specific ideas or using the power of their respective pulpits to force the issue?
Yeah no wonder people are so underwhelmed by this group of candidates
Look, its painfully clear Obama failed to lead on the debt crisis, but its equally clear that the crop of Republicans vying to replace him did, too.
rombot waited to see which way it would go.
I remember the line “everyone I talk to still believes in contested primaries”.
I remember a particular PDS sufferer talking about how her comments were ill timed, malicious, cowardly, and were an unfair exercise of her “disproportionate” influence.
That was funny.
Romney has two mouths and speaks from one or the other as it best suits his interests.
She’s a private citizen, the same as you and I!! What a hoot!
Well she will be damned if she does and damned if she doesnt...
I can't stand Romney, but this is an idiotic point.
The absence of the sitting president of the United States in the debate is a tad more serious than the non-participation of the douchey ex-governor of Massachussetts.
MB has more courage and a better sense of right v. wrong than any of the other announced GOPers.
MB, you da chick!
And somewhat related, watch next year for all the PRIMARY CHALLENGES to GOPers in House and Senate.
Any GOPer voting for the debt fraud (and tax hike and military cut) bill will face an angry GOP electorate in the forthcoming primaries.
.
In other words, he would have raised the debt ceiling, just like all but a tiny minority in the Washington, DC Party.
Mittens is really late to the party
Romney took a stance not long after Palin released her tweet.
Romney came out in support of Boneheads Bill.
Now he says he’s against it.
Which statement was true Mitt?
I can’t wait until Mittens runs against Barry in the 2012 Democrat primaries. Mittens is the better of the two liberal Democrat candidates.
The very idea of a Republic is that a convincing leader, even if a private citizen, will exercise a disproportionate influence - leading often to their eventual election and exercise of a Constitutional disproportionate power.
I’m just waiting for Madame President’s instructions for the next move...
I want this jackass to bail out so that someone with set can actually fight the good fight. Romney, Gingrich, etc. GO HOME. We need a Reagan, not a Dukakis.
I did not realize Romney was a schitzoid Tea Party taliban terrorist hobbit. Here we were thinking Willard was a rino!/s/
Way to go Willard, you’re really out on a limb, there.
Talk about having the courage of one’s convictions. The Mittster is beyond compare.
I think it’s all that executive presence, don’t you?
