U.S. Sen. Rob Portman today endorsed fellow Republican Josh Mandel, the current state treasurer, for the U.S. Senate seat now held by Democrat Sherrod Brown.
Although Portman's backing of Mandel was not unexpected, he hadn't announced it until today when he met with The Dispatch's editorial board.
"I'm helping Josh," Portman said. "I guess I haven't officially endorsed him yet, so I guess this is a news opportunity. But I'm helping Josh. I don't know if anybody else is going to get in. I think his fundraising in the second quarter has been pretty impressive. I think he's a good candidate. He also understands that the message has to be the economy and jobs."
Portman acknowledged that he had met with Mandel about the campaign, adding, wtih a smile: "He's not shy and retiring."
Mandel, a former state representative from Lyndhurst who began a four-year term as treasurer in January, raised $2.3 million for the Senate race between April 1 and June 30. Former state Sen. Kevin Coughlin of Cuyahoga Falls also is seeking the GOP nomination to challenge Brown, who will be seeking a second six-year term.

I feel pretty good about our chances in this race. Josh Mandel is wowing his party and seems to be making the right moves.
Sherrod Brown is a disgrace! Trivisanno jumps on him frequently. I think Triv is from Lyndhurst, so he’ll have some interesting shows, I’m sure!
Mandel is a hard hard campaigner. I hope he cleans Browns clock.
Good call. Mandel is definitely a rising star.
Portman is the question mark. He won easy eleciton to replace retiring RINO George Voinovich in 2010 but has done nothing since, even tho a budget and trade expert for Dubya. It is rumored he will be on the Super Congress committee. He could well be a RINO or at least a Bush-type republican. He has not spoken out for Tea Paryt, against tax hikes, anything significant (that I know of)
Yes!!!!!
Josh Mandel has great promise. I expect he’ll have caught up with Sherrod Brown in the polls by next summer.
I did see him on Fox talking spending cuts, but he has not been very outspoken.
It looks like Mandel’s outstanding early fundraising has cleared the field. I assume that Portman was keeping his powder dry in case Jim Jordan or someone else decided to jump in, but there was no reason to keep waiting.
Natalie Portman endorses Howie Mandel?
If they can pick up this seat it will be a big boost in getting the GOP to 51. Could be critical especially if 0bama manages to fool enough morons into reelecting him. Though as more polling news shows idiots out there blame Republicans and the tea party more for the mess we are in than blame 0bama it is not easy to be optimistic.
With one exception, I agree with you. I voted for Rob, and basically have thought of him as a more-or-less good egg. But he voted for the debt ceiling raise. And, at least for me, that is a no vote for him next time. I hope he does some good in the rest of his term. But unless something really, truly sterling happens, I’ll vote for the other guy in the primary.
If he gets the nomination, he’ll also get my vote next November. He seems like a great guy and I want Sherrod Brown, aks/liberal communist GONE!
