In a state like Alabama, where they already have a state income tax, plus sales tax on food, adding another 9% would be fifteen dollars on every hundred bucks one spends on groceries..
That's eleven boxes of the Walmart version of Honey Bunches of Oats, or 9 pkgs of hormel hot dogs. I can't imagine people would want to pay that.
My state doesn't have a state income tax, nor tax on food, except sodas, pre prepared food, and candy, but in the present economic downturn, I wouldn't want to have that 9% tax on food. I think this kind of sales tax will push more people needing food stamps.
Also, I don't much care for the "empowerment zone" stuff for inner cities.
So what is your specific objection to the national sales tax?
Why is it impossible for Cain to win the GOP nomination?
I'm not getting your joke here.
Cain could still flame out or fizzle out but he is riding high right now and he has already shown far more passion, ability, and leadership potential than Fred ever did.
I have seen a number of FReepers state this but no one ever gives any evidence. How do you reckon this is true?
He’s had two weeks to practice. Obama was able to pass as a good debater after only one week of practice. If that moron can pull it off, Perry should have no problem.
BUT... I’m sick of “uh... uh... uh” and TOTUS. I’d prefer not to go through another 8 years of it.
Cain’s plan creates a 9% national sales tax but eliminates the payroll tax which is over 15%. Also the sales tax would not apply to all goods but the payroll tax does apply to all earnings for most people. One has to look at the whole plan to see how any individual would fare under it.
I agree with you about the “empowerment zones”, though. The whole country should be one big empowerment zone.
Cain is running for potus as a political neophyte. He has no governing or legislative record to judge him on. Except for his rhetoric, I have no idea what he will do. I've seen Cain give answers to several questions that left me shaking my head. His interview with Stossel on Fox concerning abortion was confusing. His debate performances are lively and loud with good talking points, but no real substance. Two issues that Cain has specific plans on -— his 999 tax plan and his Chilean plan for SocSec -— were created to draw a distinction between himself and the other candidates. Imo, both are gimmicks or political ploys and neither one will see the light of day for obvious reasons.
Obama has had his whole UNDOCUMENTED life to practice.
I pretty much agree with everything you say about Cain, but that is just a list of his negatives. All candidates have those. Voters still have to order from the menu and Romney is no more popular among the GOP primary electorate than he was a month, a year, or four years ago. That leaves Cain, Perry and who else? I think Perry can overcome his bad decisions as Governor and his unpopular positions, but if he can’t stop looking simultaneously stupid and arrogant then I believe he will not beat Cain.
Romney is polling 20%-25% and will probably pull in most of the moderate and liberal vote, along with a block of conservatives. That might get him as high as 35%, may be 40%. With Perry and Cain splitting the remaining conservatives, the also-rans with 5%-10%, plus Paul's 10%, this is Romney's race to lose.
So you start from the assumption that a whole new revenue stream for the Federal government is a good idea, and await arguments against it? Conservatism ain't what it used to be, that's for sure.
Well, I am a merchant. I make my living by selling products and services. Do I want my prices raised 30%? Do I want to be drafted into the role of tax collector?
If we want to tax consumption, why don't we start with imports? Why eat our own merchants first? If the argument against taxing imports is that it would raise prices for "consumers", what is the argument for laying the burden on our domestic producers?
Why would you give to the Federal government an entirely new form of taxation, on top of the income tax? Only the most naiive souls can believe this is a good idea. They're way ahead of us in Europe. Is this where you would lead us?
What's our argument now? The government has no power to charge a fine for those without health insurance, but they have the power to tax abolutely everything we buy? This is small government?
It's a sad joke really. The Tea Party apparantly stands for taxing tea--and everything else we buy. I think it's time to toss the TEA PARTY into the harbor.
Meanwhile, most Chinese imports have no tariff on them at all. Free trade for China, the shaft for US merchants and producers. Makes sense /s
Last time around it was Huckabee shilling this idea. It's snake oil, plain and simple, and those who try to sell it should be held at arms' length. Those who fall for it are rubes.
Romney? It looks like he's cruising to a coronation--even his fellow Republican candidates are helping him.
Bachmann? It looks like that isn't going to happen. Newt? This is a possibility. Ron Paul? Over my dead body, I'd rather take my chances with Romney. Huntsman? Ha!
This is the reality of where we are right now. We must keep our wits about us.
Perry actually has a pretty darned good record of governing in TX. Would you rather have Romney or Perry?
Then there’s the fact that anyone with savings and investments would be taxed AGAIN on the same money. It’s already been income taxed and payroll taxed. Some of it has been capital gains taxed and dividend taxed. Now, on top of all that, it’ll be sales taxed. Yeah, that’s conservative /s
“You are rude, crude and insulting to those of us who live in TX. You must be one of those liberals, or an Obama Dem who is engaging in disinformation.”
I apologize if I appear to be what you charged. I wouldn’t knowingly insult someone who lives in Texas as I do. We strongly support Perry and disinformation is what we fight against all the time. He has been blindsided by insignificant issues in the media. I’ll watch my attitude.
“Did not read to the end huh sonny? paul? Good God.”
You’re right. I was involved in rapid fire response and didn’t read the.last part. I’ll watch it. PS: I’m not a sonny.
I support Perry and I’m 78..Feel free to call me youngster.
