Barney Franks bombshell retirement announcement sent shock waves rippling through the Bay State and set the stage for an epic national clash as Democrats and Republicans prepare to do battle over a seat that until yesterday seemed staunchly and securely blue, observers said.

I would have had to work very hard, said Frank, who has served in Congress for 32 years and faced a brutal re-election battle in 2010. I think I would have won, but I do know this it would have been a tough campaign.
The new district was stripped of New Bedford a pro-union stronghold as well as eight other liberal-leaning communities...
