Poll: Dramatic drop in Gingrich support in Iowa
Washington Examiner ^ | December 15, 2011 | Byron York

Posted on 12/15/2011 7:02:30 AM PST by Zakeet

A new survey from pollster Scott Rasmussen shows support for Newt Gingrich in Iowa has fallen sharply in recent days. The poll shows the former House speaker with the support of 20 percent of likely Republican caucus-goers -- down from 32 percent in the last Rasmussen survey released November 15.

Gingrich has now fallen into second place in the Iowa race, behind Mitt Romney, who is at 23 percent, up from 19 percent in the last Rasmussen survey.

The complete poll results are: Romney, 23 percent; Gingrich 20 percent; Ron Paul, 18 percent; Rick Perry 10 percent; Michele Bachmann, 9 percent; Rick Santorum, 6 percent; and Jon Huntsman, 5 percent. Ten percent of likely caucus-goers said they support some other candidate or are not sure how they will vote.

In the new survey, every candidate but Gingrich gained support in the last few weeks. The biggest gainers were Romney, up four points; Paul, up eight points; and Perry, up four points. Michele Bachmann climbed three points, as did Jon Huntsman, who has been to Iowa a grand total of one time in the campaign.

Gingrich, on the other hand, fell 12 points.

"This is the fifth consecutive monthly poll with a new leader," Rasmussen says in an email. "It was Bachmann in August, then Perry, Cain, and Gingrich. Amidst all the volatility, Romney's numbers have held steady each month, and Ron Paul has been in double digits each month."

Rasmussen warns that the race remains volatile, with only 40 percent of likely caucus-goers sure of how they will vote.

These people need to be leveling their vitriol and venom at Romney. Which one can go back on the forum history and see very little coming out against Romney from these same people.

Instead, they go out of their way with the nastiest, most biased and dishonest rhetoric and demagoguery against our front runners, that would impress the most Marxist Liberals and Democrats. In fact, they are watching this forum closely, in order to learn how to attack our candidates in ways that they are incapable of.

This goes beyond shameful. It’s downright insanely tragic.

Rasmussen doesn’t always get it right. I need to see more than one poll to say that there is a shift.

How can you project that at this early stage, saying that “Newt can't”? Do you have some monopoly on predicting the future? Why are you doing the very things you just condemned everyone else of, a few sentences back?

Perry still stands a remote chance because no votes have been cast yet. But in all reality, looking back at history and election statistics. Perry is at best, a very unlikely pick to win. His Public image is way too tarnished for that to happen.

I disagree. I will not be held responsible in any way for Romney getting the nomination. I don’t believe that the vitriol and in-fighting is in any way unhealthy. These politicians need to answer for their records and what they’ve done in and out of office.

This is a battle, and so far the conservatives have in full throat been yelling “we don’t want Romney!” We have not been laying down and we are aware of their games. We saw it all last year with Specter and Crist, and Bennett and Murkowski, etc. and now they’re trying it with the presidency.

Romney is the only candidate that has not been through the media onslought because they are waiting for him to be the nominee to destroy him. All the others have been through it and will be ready.

I was for Palin, then for Cain and am now for Gingrich. In my view he’s the only one who’s been through this before and he knows how to hande the media and shut them up. He can handle Obama, and would make a good president. He will tear the executive establishment asunder. If he remains standing after this nomination process, I think he’ll be more than prepared for what’s to come.

The only morons are the “conservatives” who are cutting our candidates off at the knees. That goes for any GOP candidate! We seriously need to stop eating our own.

“he will destroy obummer in the debates.”

Like he destroyed Kerry in their Global Warming “debate”? That turned into a love fest. I think we need to move off of this delusion. There will be no Lincloln-Douglas debates (three tops) and Newt has put the bar so high for himself all Oboma has to do is show up to be declared the winner.

I am an avowed independent an declare no allegiance to any one candidate so I don’t drool over the next candidate in the succession line.

You are so correct about Perry and Bachmann and their respective performances. I remember watching the first debate and waiting to see how it would all fall into place, to see how the candidates would position themselves. It was clear from the git go that Perry was another GWB and that Bachmann was pandering to the point of absurdity.

However, the multitude of Perryzombies foaming at the mouth on FR Perry threads with all their Perry worshiping made it even more difficult to even reconsider Perry. Its like the cult of Perry, I wonder if these zealots all gather together at Perry-parties to bow down towards Texas 5 times a day.

Iowa is all about who will give them the most free stuff, starting with ethanol subsidies. They don't call it Little Sodom on the Prairie for nothing.

I realize that there are a lot of good conservative people in (mainly) western and (mainly) rural Iowa. I also realize we have many of the same problems here in Pennsylvania. But we don't share Iowa's inflated sense of self-importance.

Here at FR, we discuss, analyze and fight about who is better.
One thing is for certain: We are better informed than most of the electorate who aren’t tuned in or even watching the debates.

I have “interviewed” some “Republicans’ in my family and elsewhere. They usually say one of the following:
1.Romney is good looking and seems nice.
2.Romney will bring in the Independents and his moderation is a good thing.
3.Gingrich is a has been.
4.Romney will be the GOP candidate.

Romney is by far, the weakest candidate. His numbers have been stuck for over 10 months. The MSM can easily see this and know full well that if and when he wins the nomination, he will be easily torn apart. And the media will score a double hit, because if Romney gets it, the base will be seriously demoralized, vote third party, or stay home.

The result will not only be another win for Obama, but the Democrats will take back the House and the Senate will become a 60 seat majority for them again.

Game, Set, Match, Socialist America, Single Payer Obamacare, and all of that. Goodbye American Pie!

I happen to like Perry’s off the collar bluntness and don’t think his brain fart was a big deal.Bachmann is very articulate. So we will have to agree to disagree. What is the matter with Santorum? I think I am the only one that does not have one set candidate.I am for the original tea party candidates (in which Newt was never in BTW) Perry,Bachmann,Santorum are all that is left is the reality no one likes.

I for the life of me can’t figure how you can accept Gingrich but diss and dismiss Bachmann,Perry and Santorum?Gingrich is smart but even Bill Bennett (I think that was his exact correct name) on Fox last night said he and Gingrich are long time friends) that Newt has an ego problem.

I like Gingrich.I liked Gingrich before it was the cool thing on FR to like Gingrich.(REMEMBER all the Pelosi RINO sofa threads on Newt?)

I do not see Gingrich beating Obama. The old grey haired career, lobbiest, politician is McCain with more brains on how to appease both sides of the aisle; with a true love of history. The MSM will put it out RIGHT VS. LEFT the crony grey haired pub that is for the rich man.Obama would win against Gingrich and Axelrod knows this.

I will vote based on who has actually governed as a conservative. That person is Perry. I know that he has some baggage concerning immigration but he is still the best person who has proven that he will govern as a conservative.

Perry is wayyyyyyyyyyyyy too conservative for Ron Paul voters. They would most likely stay home.

You have to keep in mind that Iowa is a state filled with attention whores. If too many people stuck to their candidate or said they were not open to changing their minds, they would cease to get all the attention.

I'm going to go out on a limb and bet Ron Paul ekes out a narrow win in Iowa. I grew up in the midwest and understand the midwestern isolationist mentality. People in flyover country are fed up with long-term foreign entanglements, the financial commitment which they entail and the Wall Street/open borders mentality which tells them to shut up and adapt to it.

I'm not a Paulista, BTW. Every time I think I could hold my nose and vote for him, he makes some stupid foreign policy statement which brings me back to reality. But I understand his appeal. IF he can avoid any more breathtakingly stupid gaffes between now and the January caucus, he wins in Iowa. You heard it here first.

My goal is solely to beat obama. Newt is a disaster for us on all levels.

if i have to pick a RINO, Huntsman would be better than Romney, but both would be better than Newt.

Actually, everyone seems to be predicting a Paul win. And everyone realizes that he is not a realistic candidate.

He’s the Ralph Nader of the Republican party.

“There will be no Lincloln-Douglas debates (three tops) and Newt has put the bar so high for himself all Oboma has to do is show up to be declared the winner.”

You may see obama as the messiah and be in “awe” of the man but I, like Newt, see obummer as a POS who can and will be ealily beaten.

As for the debates, if Obama has the courage to show up at any debate with Newt, he’s beat.

Obama has demonstrated that he is ignornant and can’t put two sentecnes together w/o a teleprompter. U thinks way to highly of this low-life pice of crap.
