It’s a common complaint—we’ve certainly made it over the years—that too much political campaign coverage focuses on the horse race. The packed debate schedule in the current GOP nomination battle has put a bit more focus than usual on the substance of what the candidates are saying, which is good. But even so, most of this coverage has wound up being about whether a given policy position might help or hurt a candidate’s chances of winning. What’s most important has been left largely unexamined: if one of these candidates actually becomes president and advances his or her policies, what would be the consequences for the nation?
Part of the reason this question is seldom addressed is that it’s genuinely hard to do; it requires thinking three steps ahead and accounting for numerous variables. But there’s also a widespread assumption that extreme positions taken in the primaries will fade in the general election as candidates “move to the center,” and will disappear entirely once the serious business of governing begins. Surely President Newt Gingrich would not get rid of child labor laws. Surely President Perry would not seek to eliminate three cabinet departments.
We don’t think that this year, with this GOP, those assumptions are warranted. And so we asked a distinguished group of reporters and scholars to think through the hitherto unthinkable: What if one of these people actually wins?(continued)

After tonight's civilized, intelligent debate, which probably left some in the media stunned that this event did not turn out to be a WWE ringside event on which to report. I am guessing the media had anxiously awaited punches to be thrown leaving Romney bloodied and torn; and probably had to quickly regroup as couldn't used the canned follow up analysis that was typeset to be delivered after the debate.
I am not going to give Ms. Sawyer and Stef or Mcelveen any jabs; as they seemed fair enough, plus allowed the candidates to finish their deliveries with added "campaign speeches" even if they had tried to keep the answers from becoming just that. The candidates were allowed to finish.
All and all, it was well done. The only real negative reaction came from the black Obama Democrat female [name escapes me] during the aftermath of the event, where all of the panel looked at her at one point when she said Romney was the choice of the Left as the weakest against OB, and pretty much in unison they exclaimed, "You don't really believe that do you?"
I don't normally like the American Political Idol tryouts, but liked this one. Would of liked to have seen Bachmann still there; but then Palin helped put an end to that when she told her supporters, Bachmann "wasn't ready yet".
Here's hoping that Republican candidates and their handlers are willing to aggressively return fire, as well as strike preemptively. Any candidate that sits still while an Obama supporter is screaming "radical" deserves to lose.

They have open offices in 10-15 states and if they get enough votes in the Election they could swing the election to Zero which is what they are trying to do! yea and John Podesta who started the Center for American progress group after he worked for Clinton!

I will laugh, scream and cry for joy for at *least* 6 hours, non-stop.
Beyond that, it’s all gravy.
I will invest $75,000 in select US companies’ stock to help the economy on its rapid rebound.
When nobama loses I will purposefully smirk at one of my mental-midget liberal neighbors who has been oh-so-smug of late.

After O loses and once the tingle stops running up my leg and after I fall asleep after watching the 48 hour cry fest on MSNBC I will get back to work knowing the nightmare is over.
