Pa. GOP endorses [Obama Supporter] Welch as a challenger for Casey

HARRISBURG — A Chester County entrepreneur won the endorsement Saturday from Pennsylvania’s Republican Party in what could be a bruising, four-way primary election for the nomination to contest Democrat Bob Casey’s re-election bid for U.S. Senate.

The endorsement was won by Steve Welch after an extraordinary show of power by Gov. Tom Corbett, who began calling state party officials to tell them of his support for Welch less than two weeks ago.

(snip)

The endorsement of Welch will be viewed by grassroots party members “as a poke in the face,” Rohrer said.

Welch has been criticized by his rivals for briefly changing his registration to Democrat so he could vote for Barack Obama in the 2008 Democratic presidential primary and giving money to Sestak when he ran for U.S. House in 2006.

Bob Casey Jr? He’s still alive? It’s like a Sasquatch sighting.

The PA GOP is totally bankrupt. If anyone is wondering why Rick Santorum lost so badly in his last Senate race, you can look to the PA GOP establishment and Santorum's willingness to go along to get along with them.

Wonder if he learned his lesson?

No different than the WV GOP endorseing Spike Maynard against Nick Rahall (D) WV3 in 2010. Maynard, a life-long RAT was PO’d at being primaried out of his judgeship in 08 and switched to the GOP in early 2010 to run for the House.

Sadly, it IS how the GOP does things.

Santorum should bow out of the presidential primary and toss his hat into the PA Senate race.

So you don't have a problem with his support for Obama and Sestak, as well as his brief party switch?

And I could really care less what his current website says. His prior actions speech much louder than his nice words now.

Anyone can put up a website. Anyone!

We have a chance to have TWO conservatives in the Senate from PA and you think endorsing Welch (who endorsed Sestak over Toomsy) is a good idea? Squishy RINO just doesn’t seem strong enough. He DIDN’T WANT Toomey in the US Senate... That is enough for me to know.

Corbett thinks he’s the boss of the GOP in PA, he tried to push Mike Turzai into a western PA district for Congress but Turzai backed out.

That’s the race being contested by a real outsider, Keith Rothfus, who defeated the GOP insider in the primary in 2010 and nearly beat Altmire in the general election.

None of those are deal breakers. One always has to look at it considering the alternatives.

If I thought Welch was actually supporting Obama, I would agree with you but it looks like he was participating in an "OPeration Chaos" type operation.

Heck, we have all kinds of Freepers right here today alleging that Obama will be better than Romney. The PC position here on FR is to favor Obama over Romney. They become Obama supporters. Where is the outrage?

But then he turned around and contributed to Sestak's campaign against Toomey. Sorry, but that had nothing to do with Operation CHAOS.

Corbit may THINK he runs PAGOP, but the real power here is good ol Bobby Asher.

His chocolate coated fingerprints are all over this.

Guaranteed.

Welch is outstanding. Tim Burns is okay, but cannot come close to matching Welch as a debater. Welch also comes from a business background and has common sense ideas for solutions. He also speaks very quickly - - so fast that he can get a point across before Casey can raise those eyebrows.

He's so outstanding that he backed Obama and Sestak.

we’re not sure he is still alive...

but more like hiding under a rock some where, and comes out on occasion..

If you send him a question or comment, he responds back with a two page letter full of Democrat talking points and will have nothing to do with the comment you sent...he makes me LOL..

He ran on his dad’s shirt tails and that is all he did..a really wussy..JMHO
