Tea Party group endorses Manzullo over Kinzinger in lawmaker match-up

The two were thrown together after the Democrat-controlled restricting process was finished. Their primary has turned into a funhouse-mirror image of many races between older establishment Republicans and younger Tea Party challengers.

Kinzinger won his seat in 2010 with strong Tea Party support but has developed a more centrist voting record since he entered the House, making establishment Republicans happy but angering his Tea Party base.

His decision to quit the conservative Republican Study Committee and join the centrist Tuesday Group after a fight between the RSC and House GOP leaders pleased Boehner but infuriated groups like Freedomworks, which cite that switch as one reason they've endorsed Manzullo. He's also angered local Tea Party groups with some of his votes; the Illinois Tea Party, a confederation of statewide Tea Party groups, is also backing Manzullo.

Illinois's primary is on March 20.

it is hard to believe that these serious primaries are already upon us.

and NY is still doing redistricting. Hinchey and Turner (R) seats are going and there is a bizarre discussion of a new seat (near Poughkeepsie? lower Hudson)

The old NY23 seat becomes more Republican. Owens gets screwed.

Well, that’s unfortunate. Many had high hopes for Kingzinger.

“The old NY23 seat becomes more Republican. Owens gets screwed.”

Excellent.

Too bad about Turner’s seat but that was expected.

Bad news for Buerkle too?

I know an equal number of conservatives, who are on both sides, in that race. It will be very close.

I agree. I'm staying out of this and remaining neutral. Shame we have to lose one of them.

the judge is helping Buerkle. Cornell campus is going into Tom Reed (R-29) district in the judge’s map.

I hope the scum who redistricted Illinois are cursed to the 10th Generation. My entire life I've had a GOP Rep, I now am stuck with Lipinski, unless every Arab stays home, I get Lipinski. The IL-3 is West Saudi Arabia, along with West Warsaw, ironic since radical Muslims and moderate Jews are joining to support a Roman Catholic. But remember as long as he has a D after his name he's ok!

There are two unknowns running in the R Primary, haven't seen any yard signs, commercials, mailers, ANYTHING!

Worst yet one of the most crooked members of the IL House has retired and the idiot Republican running along hasn't released ANYTHING!!! No one knows who he is whereas I see the Rat signs everywhere!!!

If this doesn't prove the Combine is real then Sandra Fluke is a nun!!!

I was leaning towards Kinzinger cause I thought he was young man going places compared to Manzullo, a solid conservative but backbencher type.

But these developments turn me in the other direction. No reason to have less than a solid conservative in one of our allotted safe seats.

I'd like to get some more specifics, including overall voting ratings from a couple of groups, before declaring Kinzinger a RINO—the mere fact that a Tea Party group is miffed at him is not sufficient. I know Manzullo is a solid, if unexciting, conservative, but from the 2010 campaign thought that Kinzinger was a conservative as well.

I agree that Rep. Kinzinger is conservative. In 2010, some tea party leaders endorsed him. While he’s been in Congress, he proved that he’s pro-tax cuts, pro-spending cuts, and pro-life.

For what it’s worth the new ACU ratings are out. Kinz got a 72 to Manzullo’s 92. It looks like another year of atypical scoring like 2009 (decent conservative Shimkus and Aaron Schock each got 68 and Roskam only a 76) so I take them with several grains of salt.

Joining the Tuesday group is a terrible sign for Kinz though, yuck.
