Republican Dan Lewis drops out of race for Congress (New Mexico)

Albuquerque city councilor Dan Lewis has dropped his bid for Congress.

Lewis, a Republican, announced his decision in a news conference Tuesday.

In a statement, he said he was quitting the race in part to avoid a contentious primary that could damage the eventual GOP nominee.

His departure from the race for the 1st Congressional District race leaves Republican Janice Arnold Jones to face one of three Democratic challengers in November.

The Democratic field includes former ABQ Mayor Martin Chavez, former state legislator and city councilor Eric Griego and current Bernalillo County Commissioner Michelle Lujan Grisham.

The congressional seat is currently held by Democrat Martin Heinrich, who is leaving the seat to run for an open Senate seat created by the retirement of longtime Sen. Jeff Bingaman.

Lewis’s campaign for the Republican nomination was damaged after rival Jones beat him badly at a preprimary nominating convention for Republican delegates this past weekend.

Ex-state Rep. Janice Arnold Jones will be the Republican nominee. I don’t know very much about her, other than she hasn’t raised much money yet. This is a swing district.

I hope she is conservative, and I hope she wins.

Arnold-Jones has complained about the Supreme Court decision that partially overturned McPain-Feingold.

Not a great sign.

“Not a great sign.”

True, but this is district that has received a number of liberal migrants lately. I’ll settle for her.
