By Even Academic Standards, David Dewhurst is “centrist”
Red State ^ | April 2, 2012 | Erick Erickson

In the race for U.S. Senate in Texas, the conservative candidate clearly is Ted Cruz. His record of fighting for conservative ideals is clear, as I have noted before. Senator DeMint has endorsed him, as has Senator Mike Lee, the Club for Growth and a number of other important conservative voices.

But the establishment and conventional wisdom remains behind Lt. Gov Dewhurst as the favorite – despite the fact he has shown relatively poor polling, mediocre fundraising and is relying on his personal wealth to try to persuade Texans he is actually conservative. But the truth is hard to hide. I have pointed out before that Dewhurst is a moderate in the mold of Florida Governor Charlie Crist. Thus, we affectionately refer to him as Dewcrist.

Everyone in Austin knows DewCrist is a moderate. Everyone in Austin knows he stands in the way of conservative policy. Everyone in Austin knows he would be the first guy in the U.S. Senate to join the “club” and saddle up to Mitch McConnell to be a “team player,” no matter what principle dictates or what the people of Texas actually want.

But now, even academic research is making this crystal clear. In the Texas Tribune, Rice University Professor Mark Jones explains his rather detailed analysis of Dewcrist and his ideological placement among those in the Texas Senate, the body over which he presides as Lt. Governor. Jones describes him as follows:

“Is Dewhurst a “moderate?” Yes, if by that one means that he would appear to be significantly less conservative than approximately one-third of the Republican delegation in the Texas Senate.”

In Texas, conservatives need to make Ted Cruz’s candidacy a priority. The current front-runner is David Dewhurst, a country club establishment hack.

Ted Cruz has definitely got my vote. I decided that before I even knew that Dewhurst was running.

Ted Cruz would be a conservative superstar in the U.S. Senate, while Dewhurst would be somewhat to the right of Kay Bailey Hutchison but to the left of the disappointing John Cornyn.

Even more interestingly, after a few years in the U.S. Senate, Ted Cruz perhaps could be appopinted to the U.S. Supreme Court. Having Paul Clement (born in 1966) and Ted Cruz (born in 1970) replace Ginsburg and Kennedy in SCOTUS would form a solid 6-3 conservative majority that will allow us to take back our country.

“Ted Cruz has definitely got my vote.”

Tell your family, friends, and neighbors, spread the word. If a yard sign is feasible, it’s a great idea.

You couldn’t be more right. Cruz is the man for the job.

Oh a yard sign is plenty feasible around here, and most folks in my neighborhood are probably already going to vote for Ted Cruz. Folks drink a lot of TEA around here.

Wouldn't hurt to put up a sign anyway, just as a reminder.

I'll give you one guess as to who this should remind everyone on FreeRepublic of.

Agree. My vote goes to Ted Cruz. Dewhurst has been a thorn in the sides of Conservatives in Texas. He would be no better than Hutchison, who has often voted with the Dems while in the US Senate.

Come on guys, this Cruz fellow sounds too well known, I mean he’s worked for the state goverment before therefore he is a “career politician” who can’t possibly be “a lick different than Dewhurst”.

I’m shocked and appalled that there are no Texas freepers on this thread bad mouthing Cruz and suggesting 1 of the nobody candidates!

I say we should go with “Bible Studies Teacher” Lela Pittenger, think about it she’s

1)Completely unknown
2)A woman therefore she is certain to do better with women voters because women like each other just in general and they would vote for any skirt even over a man they’ve heard of
3)It’s possible her Bible teaching is just volunteer work and she’s just an unemployed housewife.
4)It’s possible one day that she might decide to get her real estate license.
5)She looks sexy in a cowboy hat

LOL!

But if Pittenger has a website, then she’s probably too “establishment” anyhow. We need to find a candidate who can’t afford the $5 a month to maintain her own campaign website. Multiple bankruptcies, foreclosures and general refusal to pay her bills on time would also be a plus. Only such a candidate will be able to avoid giving in to temptation and selling out when she gets to Washington.
