President Barack Obama has had a terrible few weeks, and it could get worse.
Especially if the Supreme Court accepts the ancient premise in that old, forgotten document called the Constitution that the federal leviathan cannot force Americans to purchase a thing, let alone health care.
But I still believe that the guy from Chicago will win re-election in November, despite all the anguish around him, because the Republican candidate, Mitt Romney, isn't exactly inspiring either.
Romney is no conservative alternative, he's merely the un-Obama corporatist, eerily similar to the big-government Illinois Republicans who partnered with Democrats to spend the state into crippling debt, those white-shoe Republicans whom Obama dealt with and learned from during his brief political apprenticeship here. He knows the type.
So if the 2012 presidential race is on Obama's ground, if it's about government subsidies for business versus government subsidies for select demographic voting constituencies, and if all of us in America keep our hands extended, waiting for government plums, then Obama wins. It's Chicago machine politics writ large.
But there are problems for the president. Centrist Democrats in the Clinton wing can't help but peel away from him, perhaps looking for a safe landing, or maybe they've got eyes on a Hillary Clinton-Rahm Emanuel ticket in 2016.
Watching Obama squirm next to Russian strongman Vladimir Putin recently, Obama avoiding eye-contact as they met to discuss Russian ambition and the catastrophe in Syria, you couldn't help but remember Mrs. Clinton's campaign commercial about that 3 a.m. phone call.
Our American president must have learned about not making eye contact with strongmen during his days in Chicago dealing with the Democratic bosses....

It’s the economy, stupid. Obama could lose to a pile of dirty sheets if the economy sucks in November and people blame him for it.
I think the author is looking at it exactly wrong.
I think obama needs to worry that being the non-Romney won’t be enough to save him.
The author is assuming that the status quo is that of course obama will be re-elected. So it sort of depends on what your assumption is, what your starting point I think it is more rational, looking at history, to assume that an incumbent with approval ratings which are 48% at best will not be re-elected...unless the other side puts up such a nut that the incumbent looks good by comparison.
The only argument that obama can make now is that he is “not Romney”....and that argument is not good enough.
We’ll it’s like this Johnny boy. I don’t think that the foreigners and “immigrants” (foreigners for those in Rio Linda) outnumber Americans in this country yet. If we can get Americans out to vote and try to hold down the ‘RAT voter fraud, your boy Barry is toast.
Being the non-Obama would even help Jimmy Carter at this point. It will help. Now, actually winning an election by just being the non-Obama... I would not be attempting that. Anybody who would attempt to run on nothing but being the non-Obama really have no business being in the race if you ask me.
Romney needs to stand for something. So far he's an empty suit.
*and george bush wasn't even on the ballot.
The republican elite just assumes not being a democrat is enough for the base to go with whatever RINO they pick. And we show them their assumption is correct every 4 years.
Well, yes, I’m afraid he’s right. Once again, for about the tenth time in a row, the GOP establishment is in a race to the bottom against the Democrat party. They are determined to lose, no matter how bad the current incumbent gets. No matter how bad the Democrat gets, they are determined to match him.
They would have to look a long, long time to find a worse candidate than Romney. But they’d rather have the worst candidate in the world than someone who might try to straighten things out and deprive them of any of their pork and perks.
Some Freepers think we should vote for Anyone but Obama. Others think that we simply cannot afford to encourage the GOP to keep coming up with these Lesser of Two Evils choices, which keep getting less and less acceptable to anyone with half a brain in his head.
Earlier, I had hopes that maybe Sarah had a secret plan that could give us another choice, herself or someone else, to pull us out of this mess. That hope has been fading over the past year.
As a matter of principle, I cannot vote for either Obama OR Romney, because I cannot in good conscience vote for a country destroying, family destroying, socialist baby-killer, whatever his party label. Our country is on the edge of a moral and economic cliff. Neither candidate shows the slightest inclination to deal with that, but both are all the while smiling about their special entitlement to office. They both clearly think they were born to be President, just to gratify their egos. That couldn’t be more delusional—except that here we are, with the politicians giving us only these two choices! Evidently they WERE born to be President.
The American People have had enough with this clown.
The best way that “ - - - we can get Americans out to vote - - - “ is to DUMP Romney in Tampa.
Just vote to ABSTAIN on the first Ballot, and vote for a winning Dark Horse on the second Ballot.
