Michigan’s Republican governor vetoes bill that would allow concealed carry in schools

Disappointing but understandable. If even the NRA was sufficiently cowed by public reaction to Sandy Hook to keep silent until today, how much political leeway did the Republican governor of a blue state have to expand gun rights — in schools?

Gov. Rick Snyder vetoed a bill this afternoon that would have allowed gun owners with extra training to carry their concealed weapons in schools, day care centers, churches and stadiums.

In his veto letter sent to the Legislature shortly before 4 p.m., Snyder said the bill had a fatal loophole that didn’t allow for those institutions to opt out of the new legislation and prohibit weapons from their buildings.

“I believe that it is important that these public institutions have clear legal authority to ban weapons from their premises,” he said. “Each is entrusted with the care of a vulnerable population and should have the authority to determine whether its mission would be enhanced by the addition of concealed weapons.”

The bill passed the Michigan legislature, which is also controlled by Republicans, the day before the Connecticut rampage, so it was Snyder alone who was left to squirm here. He made no bones about what influenced him either...

I would not want to be Rick Snyder if (God Forbid!) there is an “incident” in Michigan schools.

He has not chosen wisely.

Hey Rick, what about those institutions that want to opt in and allow weapons in their buildings? I guess they don't get to choose.

This bill was a true test of leadership and the Governor failed miserably. No spine whatsoever.

Well, Mr. Snyder you just confirmed to a bunch of loonies where they can go in your state and get the most for their buckshot. What will you say when it happens. And I hope it doesn’t.

Access to guns is one of the leading risk factors for deadly violence.

Not sure what standard of logic AllahPundit is using, however, by any standard under-girded by Morality and logic, it is not understandable, just weak.

“Disappointing but understandable.”

It isn’t understandable. It’s stupid. My prayer is that he never has to rue the day he did this.

Sorry Governor, but YOU have just mandated that none of your 'public institutions' can select their own determination. You have violated your constitutional responsibilities.

So, the Legislature changes the “loophole” and resubmits the Bill to the Governor. Should take about ten minutes.

The Law should let the Property Owners or local School Boards determine if they want to allow Conceal Carry on their property, not the State.

If I am missing something here, please let me know.

It looks to me that the MI Legislature and Governor want to let people make a choice rather than issuing a mandate. Currently, the mandate is against Conceal Carry in those locations, there is no choice.

When the supposed loophole is changed, the State Mandate against CCW holders is lifted, so get it done and move on.

clear legal authority to ban weapons from their premises

Because as we all know homocidal sociopaths respect "legal authority." But hey, what are some more slaughtered kids in a "gun free" aka "easy target" zone compared to appealing to the moronic demscum voters who dominate Michigan?

It literally is making me sick...

If the goonions had not pissed Snyder and his handlers off, we’d never have had Right To Work signed in Michigan. I guess we’ll have to find a way to piss him off against the anti-gunners.

There are a lot of his supporters which includes the Michigan NOT Taxed Enough Already Party, who persist in describing Mr. Big Government/Big Taxes as a conservative governor. Guess it helps them sleep at night.

Let me predict where this is heading.

The bill is modified to allow an opt-out, and most school boards opt out.

Then a crazy comes into one of their schools, and shoots kids.

Then a parent of one of those shot kids kills the school board members who voted to opt-out.

Or ... someone just whispers this scenario into the school board members ears, and they change their vote to opt-in.
