Last week, my friends in Western NY decided to pull up stakes and move to Texas.
If we weren’t in our mid-60s, we’d consider Texas, too. It isn’t so bad here in Tennessee (yet). Yesterday, we could hear hunters’ guns on properties adjacent to us. Sadly, the sound of gun shots made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside — like we are still living in America. They used to be just gun shots; now it’s the sound of freedom, and remarkable.
We lived in Corning, NY, for a year. $12,000/year taxes on our $300,000 home. We were amazed that people wern’t ... well ... amazed at their bills. They just paid the bills without question. Income tax was obscene. You’re right: “Sheeple”.
My mom, very low income, receives good perks (utility and medical assistance, for example) as a senior citizen in NY. We mitigate some of the shock of the taxes we paid as ultimately helping her. If we couldn’t resort to that rationalization, we still be pissed 10 years later.
ok I’ve been living ignorantly apparently in the Bronx NY all my life and never knew there was a gun maker here. Anyone know where? I’ve been considering relocating for a few years but job considerations keep me back. (I have one!)Been working at same place for 32 years. Right now owner is only staying in business because of me. He knows I will never get a job making the kind of money I make anywhere else. I’ve given a passing look at Tx. Been down there a few times on business and met the most wonderful and friendly people ever. Weather down there in on the Con side. Many Pros. My sister is going back to FL. She moved up to NY to get the bennies. So far she has gotten 2 knee replacements/back surgery/teeth are being done and a few other things. She plans to go back to Fl this summer after a clean bill of health! LOL! (Liberal side of family). Both my and my brother are very conservative and he also has a job he’s been at for over 30 years. We came from the projects and were taught to work for what we want. My son just retired from Marines after 13 years. He lives in NC. While I would love to move closer to him I have to consider Pros/Cons of living too close to family. Don’t want to be too close and involved in their daily lives. Tho’ he does want me down there. Don’t know how much longer I will have a job as you can’t keep milking a dry cow. Almost no business in the last month at all.I am just getting over almost losing my house to foreclosure. Had to get my Senators’ office involved but I think I am on track with that also. Any recommendations on where in Tx to look? Assume I couldn’t be too far from city for a job. I need to get away from all these leeches. I can’t stand it anymore. I am currently looking at NC/SC and TX.I have no savings and currently am living check to check. Expenses have killed my this last few years. Been supporting my sister and an Aunt who just had a stroke last week. I live with my brother in a 2 family house in the Bronx. The other house is for my Aunt and I rent out 2 apts. Suggestions would be appreciated. Please no flames. Am currently going thru a very painful family tragedy and will not know the outcome for a few weeks. Please pray for me and my sons family. We desperately need it right now! Desperately!
I've got the chickens, ducks, fruit trees....what I don't have is 20 acres which is the minimum requirement for an ag exemption. Of course, if I'm wrong, a nudge in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

I agree with you there. During our last gubernatorial election cycle, the challenger's platform was to get rid of property taxes. She was called a "Kook" by many, including those here at FR, and even Glen Beck had the audacity to slam her on public television for her views.
Personally, I found her platform rather impressive and refreshing. It would ensure that a person's private property (real estate) was theirs and not just leased from the county.

Yeah, agree. As a NBT (native born Texian) I welcome any and all who subscribe to the values, culture and history of this great state. But, when anyone starts that “this is the way we do it back in xxxx, well, I say it’s time for them to pack it up and head back to where they came from. There’s a running joke among we NBT’s, “the Border Patroll is guarding the wrong river”. A little humor mixed with a little fact :)

We do not have a state income tax in Texas, but our property taxes are high.
My place is just at $200K and I pay pretty close to $4K a year. True, not as high as yankee land for sure, but $728.47
On the overall tax rankings, Texas is at 7.9% of income overall. Surely not as high as some of the blue states, but very comparable to many states in the nation.
Maryland is an absolutely beautiful state, but I wouldn’t live there if they paid me.
Talk about an over reaching, controlling government...that would be Maryland.
