Who knows where all this legislation will wind up. But many states have been trying to find ways to collect tax on purchases made by their residents made via the internet. In prior decisions regarding mail-order sales, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 1992 (in the case of Quill Corp. v. North Dakota, 504 U.S. 298) that mail-order retailers were not compelled to collect use tax and remit the tax to states, in part because of the complexities of doing so.
There is a web site now where you can enter your zip code and amount of purchase and it will calculate the tax for your area. See link;

I think I remember Amazon closing down a couple of physical locations here to avoid dealing with this issue.
When I had the utter misfortune of having to deal up close and personal with sales tax issues..I seem to remember that mail-order retailers weren’t required to collect sales tax, as you have said, but the consumer is required to remit sales tax on their purchases from these companies. Like that is enforceable.
