Of course he thinks it would be a blessing, because it would ensure that the GOP would not win another presidential election.

It could also have unintended consequence -- a strong conservative party could emerge and replace the GOP as an effective opposition party.

If that were to happen, the remaining GOP would eventually merge with the Democrats, as their philosophies are closer.

That's exactly what happened in Canada- the Progressive Conservative party split and a new party took over the conservative movement. The downside is that the process took 15 years in opposition.
