George P. Bush has more than $2.8 million to spend on his campaign for Texas Land Commissioner. His two main challengers, a Republican and a Democrat, have a combined total of around $20,000.
Democrat John Cook, former Mayor of El Paso, reports raising about $13,000 since June. Republican David Watts's campaign finance filing this week indicates fundraising in the second half of 2013 of about $7,000.
Dr. Brian Smith is a professor of political science at St. Edwards University in Austin. He says what the Bush campaign is doing is a tried and true intimidation tactic.
Hes over-raising money to scare off any potential Republican challenger, Smith says. If Im a Democrat I would be, like, wow, I have to raise $3.3 million just to match him. Thats going to scare me away. If Im a Republican, Im going to be like, gosh, hes got a lot of money. Let him have it.
Dr. Smith also says Bush knows enough Texas history to know that politicians have used offices like Agriculture Commissioner and Land Commissioner as a stepping to stone to higher places.

Not mine, either.
“George P. Bush has more than $2.8 million to spend on his campaign for Texas Land Commissioner. His two main challengers, a Republican and a Democrat, have a combined total of around $20,000.”
Reminds me of 2000 when Rove et al. were bundling money like crazy for G.W. Bush, trying to overwhelm and push out any other candidates almost before the primary campaign was under way.
Where would we be without the establishment choosing our candidates for us?
I say give him a chance to serve his community. However, he has not won yet, and even with a money advantage, the wrong kind of scandal (for a republican) can take the air out of all his balloons in uno momento!

What about Sitton who has experience in oil/gas or Christian?
Also, not sure about Comptroller. No Medina or Hager.
They're up for Railroad Commission; Gee Pee is running for Land Commission. I'm still sorting through RR Commission candidates. It's tricky. You want someone who knows the industry but, on the other hand, isn't too in bed with the heavy hitters.
As with RR Commish, I haven't settled for Comptroller yet.
True. Other than a Dem, who is running against GP?
