Republican Senate hopeful Joni Ernst got a boost Sunday with the endorsement of The Des Moines Register in Iowa.

Ahead of the state's GOP primary on June 3, the newspaper's editorial board argued Ernst, a state senator, is a "smart, well-prepared candidate who can wrestle with the details of public policy from a conservative perspective without seeming inflexible."

Ernst is facing four opponents in the GOP primary. She has recently emerged as a top contender and made national headlines with unusual TV ads - one of which highlighted her hog-castrating skills while another showed her riding up to a gun range on a motorcycle.

"While she might come across in some ads as an Iowa version of Sarah Palin who rides a Harley and packs a gun in her purse, Ernst does not exhibit a Palinesque swagger in person," the editorial board writes....

That’s quite an achievement to get their endorsement, though it didn’t help Mitt Romney. If Ernst can get her numbers up against Braley we might get 4 conservatives in the senate.

Anyone know what kind of track record an endorsement from the Des Moines Register carries with it — In the past ten years xx% of candidates that received DMR endorsement went on to win the office they were seeking. Just curious, I have searched and can’t find those kind of numbers.

‘Some folks look at me and see a certain swagger, which in Texas is called ‘walking.’
George W. Bush

It’s hard to imagine people finding fault in Palin’s elegant walk.

Liberal though it is, the Des Moines Register is the largest and most widely read newspaper in Iowa. As the only major paper in the capitol city it sets the tone for the rest of the state, just as the New York Times and Washington Post do for the country at large. Their endorsement is the biggest “get” of any publication in Iowa. I lived in Iowa from 1974 to 2002, except for my time in the armed forces. I was involved in the Haig for president campaign, fundraising for the Polk County Republican Party and guarded then Vice President Bush’s aircraft while he ran for president circa 1987-88.

Braley’s in trouble...after the GOP primary...attention turns back to him...his statement dissing Grassley, and his vote in the House for Obamacare. Also, the GOP has a good chance of picking up his House seat..

Can't help with your question, but the Register is probably the most influential news organ in Iowa. It is also unreservedly liberal -- one could argue even moreso than either the New York Times or the Washington Post. There is no way they would endorse Ernst over Braley in the general.

Accordingly, one might suspect that they are engaging in some reverse psychology -- supporting Ernst in the belief that she will be the easiest Republican for Braley to beat in November. The reference to Palin actually supports this notion.

Here's hoping the elitest airheads in the Register's editorial department are proven dead wrong in November...

The extreme leftist Register pretty much carries no endorsement influence, especially with Republicans.

Democrats rely on eastern Iowa - Waterloo, Dubuque, Cedar Rapids, Quad Cities - where the Register is barely distributed.

They were probably on board with the "Ban Bossy" campaign.
