Nonsense, Newt never came close to having the nomination sewed up and what killed him was the GOPe and Black Thursday during Florida when Drudge, Rush, and everyone destroyed his momentum in what appears to have been a coordinated national attack.

Romney did not win the nomination because of immigration either, he took it by breaking spending records and 50 million of his own money and lying, and squelching the field for two election cycles, and never having to face a real challenge.

At the CNN national security debate on Tuesday, the former speaker said that he would not be in favor of kicking out illegal immigrant families that had been in the country for a long time. "The party that says it's the party of the family is going to adopt an immigration policy which destroys families that have been here a quarter century?" he said. "I'm prepared to take the heat for saying, 'Let's be humane in enforcing the law.'" (watch below) Michele Bachmann said Gingrich was offering amnesty. Mitt Romney said Gingrich was offering a "magnet" that would encourage more illegal immigration.

A similar moment almost exactly two months ago started Rick Perry's downfall. He said those who didn't agree with his in-state tuition program for the children of undocumented workers were "heartless." In 2008 it was John McCain's support for something conservatives called amnesty that almost killed his campaign.

Newt was the front runner by a wide margin until he went soft on illegal immigration, then he went into a free fall in the polls and never recovered. But feel free to delude yourself other wise. I'm not going to waste anymore time with you on this.

I’m not deluding myself at all, I remember the primary and I supported Newt,as did FR.

I remember “Bloody Thursday” and I remember Mitt Romney, at no time did Newt have the nomination “wrapped up” and have it snatched from him, and Romney did not win it because he was “firm” on immigration.
