Thursday at the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Africa, Global Health hearing titled, Combating the Ebola Threat, Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ) said he will be requesting funding for a "pandemic."
Smith said, "This is unprecedented. Many people are not cooperating with efforts to contain the disease. There is an information gap. Despite the efforts through cell phone and radio to get the message out, there is a learning curve. as we consider what to do to meet this health challenge, I suggest we get funding levels for pandemic preparedness. This is for congress and the executive branch, in a restricted environment, funding has fallen from $201 million in fiscal year 2010 two an estimated in 2010."
He added, "I have introduced legislation known as the and neglected tropical disease act which establishes to support a broad range of research activities to achieve cost-effective and sustainable treatment and control .....

"Is there ANYTHING "a little bit more funding" couldn't and yet NEVER solve?"
Does China ever fund anything?
But we keep being told there is no pandemic or epidemic here.
The TSA will have to double down on frisking White, elderly passengers and small children to protect planes from catching Ebola! MORE FUNDING!
But the BORDERS are open.
The infected are shipped to all 50 states, even Maui,
for their giant TVs and hotels.
MS-30 and their tuberculin mules for Iran
have NEVER HAD IT SO GOOD.
Thank you, EXEMPT Congress.
We don't have a pandemic here, YET, and there are a few questions:
1. How would increased funding be useful and how would it speed a cure?
2. Isn't curing pandemics overseas the job of the World Health Organization (WHO)? If they can't handle it, then let's divert our contributions FROM them to someone who can at no additional cost.
3. Where would this additional money come from? At $17 Trillion in the hole, I'd say we're tapped out.
America. Land of the terrified. Let’s panic!
Sorry to read this. Chris Smith is one of the few good ones.
Never let a crisis go to waste.
More funding will not solve this, but it is necessary. Did you watch the hearing that just concluded on C-Span??
We are so screwed!
Please, can we stop the knee jerk reactions and smart quips. I am really sick of heart to see the reactions on Free Republic. I thought of all sites, the post would be knowledgeable and thoughtful. Most of what I see is: the world is ending, nothing to worry about, Obama is responsible, etc. etc. etc.
We have a very serious issue that deserves very serious answers.
Please watch the C-Span, I am sure it will be rerun at some time. Please go to Promed email and read the information. It has archives of the reports of outbreak that go back to the start of this outbreak.
Educate yourselves. Don’t depend on posters, me, friends, etc. EDUCATE yourselves!!!
How would increased funding benefit the Ruling Class and their cronies, that is the question.
“Never let a crisis go to waste.”
Yup.....
It certainly is looking like ‘creating crisis’ in order to keep revenues flowing through their system..and other nations systems, is the popular way to continue making fools of us all.
At what point are WE going to shut off the funds?
Also the U.S. Army/Defense Department, they work with WHO and are deeply involved in these Ebola outbreaks, including this latest one.
Here they are helping during the 1976 Ebola problem.
We had a large footprint in Africa, Cummings said of the Defense Departments response to the first Ebola cases reported in 1976 in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, formerly Zaire. Since that time, the Defense Department has answered numerous calls for assistance from the World Health Organization (WHO), nongovernmental organizations and ministries of heath and defense, he said.
Well, if FReepers are frivolous, there would be more of what celebs utter, fashion trend, etc etc
Rep Smith sits on House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Africa, can he not funnel the money from the most recent Africa summit to the pandemic funding?
Why can’t Obama and the African leaders not use Skype or ‘go to meeting dot com’?
There's a crisis!
We'll have to pick yer pockets some more!
Yes, we should believe them one more time because they have been so honest, trustworthy and responsible with the money they have extorted from us so far.
My opinion exactly. China has a large presence in Africa. They should fund the treatment because they are taking advantage of the resources. But then perhaps they feel thousands of dead Africans works to their advantage.
Obama: Ebola Can Be Controlled And Contained "if I get more funding"
I don’t think the US should fund anything. The tax free Bill Gates, Warren Buffet or Slick Willy fund should more than cover a few hundred million necessary.
