Take over a rotting corpse?
Correction. Using “conservatives” and “libertarians” in the same sentence is absurd. Conservatives oppose abortion. Libertarians consider it freedom of choice. Conservatives oppose open borders. Libertarians consider it freedom. Conservatives oppose recreational drug use. Libertarians think laws against such should be removed and made readily available.
ON a gut level that may be true. But, if you vote libertarian or something else you will just split the conservative vote and give Dems total power. And we know what that means. Even if you can get a majority with these others by that time it will be to late. I am afraid it is damned if you stay GOP and double damned if you leave.
Been there, done that, got the T-shirt.
Would work though, if a sufficient mass of conservatives would actually commit in a real way to no compromise on certain core principles, and if they were held to it.
Looking to existing Republican politicians to save you is a fools’ errand though.
Silly.
There are several conservative leaning parties out there now.
I was a proponent of that fallacy until Boehner and the majority of the Congressional Republicans showed their true colors this very month. Now I see what you have been saying. The Republican and Democrat politicians are all the same, essentially members of the same Party, concerned only with their own self-interests, and cynically disinterested in the welfare of the US, the American people, or anything else.
So far, attempting to create a new, truly conservative political party to replace the present GOP hasn’t worked. Both major, U.S. political parties keep moving leftwards, while conservatives are left blowing in the wind. Something has got to give for U.S. conservatism to survive, for the long term!
We have gay rights, gay marriage, open borders, abortion on demand, the beginnings of marijuana legalization, the criminalization of Christmas, frivolous lawsuits left/right/center, all kinds of legislating from the bench, and reams of contract law that we all deal with (with no hope of having time to read) every single day. The libertarians have won and now we have taxation without representation for the majority of the country.
DC corrupts them faster than we can send.
Trying to change DC is a futile exercise.
The GOP is not fixable from within.
So how will this party dedicated to ‘free market’ help the blue collar democrats? This party’s definition of ‘free market’ is to benefit from cheap labor costs at the expense of our citizens. They want a one world economy. Unless they can make a better world for our citizens, they offer nothing to vote for. More riches for the few ain’t no way to win elections.
This is a well-intended and passionate article. I think we all agree that a govt that is more respectful of the rule of law and our hard-won individual rights, freedoms, and responsibilities (what we call a Constitutional govt) is what we want and, in fact, actually deserve. Our freedom is the only “entitlement” that is a legitimate govt purpose in the US. We all recognize that our federal gov’t and many state gov’ts have developed into a system antagonistic to gov’ts legitimate purposes.
To repair that, two things must happen, and those things will be fought hard but do not take 70 years to accomplish. First, the rewards for gov’t must align with the legitimate purposes of gov’t. Politicians’ power must be greatly restricted. Perhaps increase the number of reps and senators so the represented people are less dilute. Second, those who fund campaigns and politicians through personal favors, including job offers after service, should be solicited to donate to those who support legitimate gov’t. Go after the sources of money. Get money and publically pressure those who pour money into politics for personal gain.
But comes 2016, we can reciprocate that attitude. If we primary an incumbent House GOPe - or ten - and Dems end up taking over the seats, what do we lose?
