Video: Camille Paglia’s rant on the “mess” that is Hillary Clinton
Hot Air ^ | March 19, 2015 | Mary Katharine Ham

I like Camille Paglia. She’s ornery and interesting, not subservient to the orthodoxies so stultifying to other public intellectual academic types of her acclaim.

Reason TV’s Nick Gillespie did an hour-long interview with the woman herself, and the whole thing is worth a watch (Or listen, as I did, while cleaning my house. How’s that for maximizing the intellectual potential of my gender conformity?). But here, for your viewing pleasure is Paglia on Hillary Clinton, coattail rider and enabler of a sexual criminal, as she puts it without compunction. It’s worth it just for the Rock-style eyebrow lift and Gillespie’s barely-contained reaction. I might make it my ringtone.

(VIDEO-AT-LINK)

In this clip, she also makes reference to the power disparity between Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky, which has always been one of the more problematic things about the whole incident and feminists’ dismissal of Clinton’s sins. I was just thinking about it today as Monica Lewinsky spoke at TED. The subject of her talk was cyberbullying, with Lewinsky plausibly claiming to be one of the first victims of this unfortunate Internet pastime. This is the part that got me.

She began her speech by joking she was the only 40-something who did not wish to be 22 again.

“At the age of 22, I fell in love with my boss. At the age of 24, I learned the devastating consequences.”

Look, Lewinsky was an adult at 22. She did something wrong. It’s also perfectly predictable that a 22-year-old intern might do something dumb and wrong when encouraged by her boss who happens to be the leader of the free world. As Paglia puts it, the “disparity of power…was one of the most grotesque ever,” and it would have been utterly inexcusable to feminists and Hillary herself in any workplace, except it was exploited in the service of a Democratic president. Not to mention the trashing of Bill’s various accusers. Paglia’s always been on the right side of this issue, calling out feminists for one of their most high-profile blind-eye-turnings.

I recommend the whole interview, but the various subjects are conveniently marked and hyperlinked here for your picking and choosing.

“... Coattail rider and enabler of a sexual criminal ...”

Oh my, I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone describe Hillary that way before. But I have to say I totally agree with the above statement.

I thought the same about Christopher Hitchens. I didn’t agree with him on most....but respected his POV. Same with Pat Condell.

I know her personally having spent several evenings conversing & sharing some good food & wine with her back in the 90s with a group of people. She’s intelligent, but a chaotic thinker, who more often than not comes across as a typical leftist. Great company though & she has guts going up against the worst elements of the left, but she is, in the end, very much a product of the left.

She is also one of the most rapid fire talkers I’ve heard.

Wasn’t about voice or appearance. Reading what they wrote gives a deeper insight into their minds.

I believe the prevailing answer here at Free Republic, as stated is that homosexuality is wrong.

You're talking all wrong about Camille Paglia.

It's the wrong tone.

Thanks for the insights.

I think she's aware that she's very much a product of the Left.

Yup, and that’s what makes her, in the end, a chaotic mess as a thinker.

Is she immoral?

I would answer that "no", Paglia is NOT immoral.

She shanked Clinton repeatedly during the impeachment wars - pretty much the only Lefty to stand up for what is moral.

She's an awesome writer.

> It’s a shame so many FReepers feel they must live in an echo chamber where only conservative thoughts are expressed, what a rich opportunity they miss to gain insight to reinforce and fine-tune their own beliefs by ignoring people like Paglia who hold different views, but are intellectually honest and don’t simply spew ideological verbage.

While I agree with you, I'll say that echo chambers have their place and benefits, too. It's like everybody at dinner getting the same dessert -- there's no opportunity to share in something different from what one is eating. But at the same time, one won't be subjected to someone else eating something disgusting. And having spent a little time (very little, thank God!) reading comments on a few liberal political sites, I'm just as happy that they aren't welcomed here.

Paglia is a rare gem, a shining example of how somebody with a different point of view can be smart and witty and incisive, can disagree without being disagreeable, and everybody gets to learn something and come away enriched. It's just a shame that such erudition is so rare.

She's not intellectually lazy, unlike most on the Left, and some few on the Right.

Do I have the right of it, LongWayHome?

Oh, this I gotta hear.

This woman is off the hook awesome.

More intelkigent than me and deeply ascerbic as only someone with an incredible mind could be.

I’d also like to have her with me in a bar fight.

She doesn’t pull her punches for anyone.

I like her. She shares many of the same enemies that I do....I just never forget that she’s a leftist. And leftists are not first rate intellects no matter how delightful she is as a party guest, or writer/speaker....Bon vivant.
