Ames, Iowa - Donald Trump confirmed two things during a stop in this central Iowa town Saturday: He has no class and he may well run as an independent when he does not win the Republican nomination.
There had been considerable public evidence of both long before his appearance here today at the Family Leader Summit but Trump, who is leading several national polls of the Republican primary, erased any doubt with comments he made about Senator John McCain and a prospective independent bid.
Trump was answering questions from Republican pollster Frank Luntz on stage when he declared that John McCain, who spent six years as a POW in Vietnam, was not a war hero. Trump went on to express his preference for soldiers who werent captured, suggesting a belief that prisoners of war have some say in their captivity. Luntz had asked Trump about his reaction to McCains comment that Trump had stirred up the crazies with his candidacy. When Trump attacked McCain, Luntz asked if Trump was comfortable with that kind of criticism of a war hero.
Hes not a war hero, said Trump. He was a war hero because he was captured. I like people who werent captured. The comments clearly shocked the crowd at the summit, some of whom reacted with boos and shouts of condemnation.
McCain was shot down flying combat missions in Vietnam on October 26, 1967. He was taken captivity with a broken right leg and fractures in both arms. He was beaten and tortured repeatedly, in part because his father commanded the U.S. Navy in the Pacific....

Or the 2016 version of Paul.
“He suffered a LOT under the torture of his captors. He stayed alive. He might have never been the same after that, but to say he isnt a hero, is bunk”
Colaborating with the enemy does not make you a hero. Anyone that belittles the families of MIAs and has as their best friend the traitorous John Kerry has lost what little respect he ever had for serving his country. As a veteran, McCain is not owed an apology, but he does owe the veterans of this country an apology for voting to limit and deny veterans benefits that they have earned. And he’s made a career out of doing just that.
At least two of those charges are complete falsehoods.
Confirms that Trump has all the right enemies and that those who hate/fear the Truth are willing to do a McCain (or a Thad, if you will) and join forces across the aisle and work for a Leftists happy outcome.
McCain is a slug...no question. But if Trump was truly unapologetic for the comment, he wouldn’t have back tracked. This might be nothing or this might have ended his campaign.
Again, we talk about image and low information voters, Trump just bashed military men and women, including McCain, in the minds of the voters.
We shall see how they react.
“Trump just bashed military men and women, including McCain, in the minds of the voters”.
I don’t think so. He initially said McCain was not a hero for getting shot down (which is correct), then backpeddled when he realized Frank Klutz was trying to trick him into saying something stupid. He immediately referred to the old RINO as a “hero”, something I wouldn’t have ever done. Trump does a lot for veterans and has for years. He also ended his time on stage by saying how deplorable vets have it under Obama if he were elected president they would be one of his top priorities.
So, Trump flip-flopped?
Isn’t that why most on here like him...he doesn’t cave? He should have stuck to his guns.
I think he realized he stepped in it...and back pedaled...even Cruz said McCain was a hero.
I know what Trump meant to say and he isn’t wrong. Again, though, it is perception...the media destroys candidates based on less.
I’m a poker

Trump strikes a cord, there is no getting around it and those who think they are more intelligent and considered in their view are in for a rude surprise.
