SLO county has a Latino population, although they tend not to occupy the power positions. (They are more strongly represented in the largest city of that region, Santa Maria, just across the line into Santa Barbara County, but SLO county does have more Latin people than are ‘visible.’)
Things have come a ways since the days of the SLO county sheriff who won re-election every time the voting came up.....by getting off his otherwise-pretty-relaxed posterior anatomy....and staging a “big-time raid on crime”.....complete with SLO Telegram-Tribune reporters and photographers all along for the ride!..... the sheriff would suddenly discover the (very well established and openly operated) Nipomo Mesa cockfighting arena..... and ‘capture’ a few participants as “criminals”... the photographers dutifully would snap pictures of the big sheriff holding one of the unfortunate “criminals” in one arm and an even more unfortunate-looking cock (no, chicken) in the other. Made big press in that sleepy backwater.
Everyone who didn’t know better was led to believe this sheriff deserved re-election, that he was really right out there working hard (no puns intended) to “protect the public” from Big Time Criminals (a few hundred or so local residents, largely but not exclusively Latino, out for a happy Saturday afternoon...complete with picnic baskets, tailgating BBQ’s (remember this is Santa Maria country) and large quanta of beer. Oh yes, with their entire families, as the cock fights were always the best, most fun recreational activity in the Central Coast region (at least in the opinion of many, and at least if you confine the discussion to dry land).
Of course, the big time public protector sheriff never shut the cock fighting arena down. It remained in operation for decades that I know of (and I wouldn’t be surprised if it weren’t still there????)......as it had permanent buildings and was right off State Highway One, very convenient to get to and easy to park and join right in that festivities.
And if the sheriff ever shut the arena down, where could he stage his quadrennial big anti-crime raids? If the arena ever got torn down, cockfighting has not ceased in the area.... as can be seen from this relatively recent (2010) report of the capture of some 600 birds at a cockfighting sight just a couple miles away...
Question: is there an issue of racism here, since cockfighting is visibly loved largely within the Latino community?
Question: is this the kind of law enforcement we want to pay taxes for?
Question: is it okay for people to fight birds?
Question: is it okay for people to fight birds if they are going to eat them after?

anyway, you could always count on a couple thousand people have a very very VERY good time at these regularly -scheduled and advertised entertainment events in the Santa Maria-SLO area.
aside from that, you could always go enjoy yourself trying to dig up a clam on the beach, I guess. just not nearly as exciting or entertaining
and the rest of the SLO cockfighting story was..
that the sheriff that used the cockfights to get himself re-elected (more than once, as I recall)... was also using the cockfights as a fund-raising source (in ways not so legit, see this link...which provides another very good reason he had not to ever actually shut the cockfighting arena down~~~~~!!!!!!!!)

I think what they meant to say is that among those Democrat voters who will never, under any circumstance, vote for anyone other than their party’s nominee, Bush and Rubio are viewed very favorably, and Trump isn’t.

There’s cockfighting in Dallas and I used to pass a farm in Biloxi that raised them.
