Where have you gone, Sarah Palin? The woman who just endorsed Donald Trump is not the rogue conservative I knew in 2008

Back in December, I was at a small event in a Las Vegas bar; CNN's Jake Tapper was interviewing Sarah Palin. He asked which candidate she'd most like to grab a beer with. Her answer? Donald Trump.

Trump, of course, has been sober his whole life. But the moment perfectly encapsulates the Palin-Trump romance. Because in addition to endorsing a beer run with a man who doesn't drink, she also just endorsed for the presidency a man who is neither a committed conservative nor an anti-establishment rogue.

Trump's long history of liberalism is well known. He was once a registered Democrat who supported Democratic candidates, from Bill de Blasio to Hillary Clinton. He has said publicly that the economy usually does better under Democrats. At times he's supported legalizing drugs, raising taxes on the wealthy and embracing isolationist foreign policies.

But what's most jarring is the positions he's held on a number of issues that are particularly important to Palin.

In the past, he called himself "very pro-choice." Yet Palin - who made the very courageous and compassionate decision to have a baby she knew would be disabled - is unbothered.

On guns, he once supported a ban on so-called assault weapons and longer waiting periods to purchase a firearm. That should be deeply disconcerting to Palin, a Second Amendment firebrand who once said, "If you control arms, you control the people."

And Trump has supported universal health care - expressing admiration for Scotland's single-payer system as recently as last year. Palin spent years denouncing Obamacare, which is many steps short of a single-payer plan, as "socialized medicine."

These aren't minor policy differences. The beliefs long embraced by Palin and long eschewed by Trump are fundamental to conservatism. That Trump has suddenly gotten religion - on issue after issue - should be met by Palin with suspicion.

If his world-view weren't enough to make Palin cringe, Trump's inauthenticity as an anti-establishment candidate should be. Palin admirably took on what she called the "good old boy network" to become Alaska's first female governor. Now, she leaps to support a guy who helped create that network and who thrives in it. In what bizarre world is a billionaire real estate mogul who donates money to Rep. Nancy Pelosi and Sen. Harry Reid "anti-establishment"?

Over the past eight years, Palin's influence within the Tea Party has remained strong, but her favorability rating among all Americans has dropped 40 points. Worse, her rating among Republicans has declined more than 55 points.

But despite that waning influence, I've supported and admired Palin for defending life, religious liberty and gun rights, and for being a strong mother to a disabled son and another serving overseas.

The Sarah Palin I knew in 2008 - the one who campaigned tirelessly and many times thanklessly for John McCain, a war veteran Trump has openly mocked - would have seen through Trump's charlatan candidacy. The Sarah Palin I knew in 2008, a devout Christian whose faith was constantly scrutinized by the secular left, would have no affection for a man who is constantly scrutinizing the devout Christian faiths of other conservative candidates.

The Sarah Palin I knew in 2008, who was a passionate and fearless voice for hockey moms, mama grizzlies and women everywhere, all while enduring patently sexist attacks from the left, wouldn't have supported a man who calls other women bimbos and slobs, thinks women who breast-feed and go to the bathroom are "disgusting," and criticizes another candidate for her looks.

That Sarah Palin is gone. Maybe one day, over a beer, she'll tell me why.

“hounded out of office?” You mean “quitting her job halfway through her term?”

Perhaps she doesn’t use her special needs child to sway an election especially over a leftist guy who probably said vile things about her.

Yep. Thanks. As far as I know that word ‘Trumpeters’ has only appeared here on FR and used only by me. Which tells me that some one on FR is really Sarah P.

How do you like that for influence?

Watching Sarah I got the impression she had to be reading here.

To be fair maybe you coined “trumpeters” but you were not the only one to use it.

I abore the word ‘fair.’ Life is unfair despite the State’s attempt to make it otherwise.

I doubt that anyone else has used it - if so that piece where ever it as printed is even more obscure than I am.

Sarah P is on FR - easier to believe.

Come one. Lots of people here have used trumpeter. You may have been the first, but you are NOT the only one.

In her speech, Sarah lists numerous problems that the people of America have been wanting fixed for a long time. She sees the District of Columbia as a money pit doing nothing but lining their pockets and putting the needs of America in the dumpster. Trump knows the system and has even fed the blood suckers himself in order to jump the regulative hurdles they throw at builders like himself. And, I know how these blood suckers operate because my father was a building contractor. All it does is make them more greedy. Trump knows their number and how they do zer0 for the American people.

Both Sarah and Trump have been friends for a long long time and have been talking to each other. Sarah communicates with a lot of people, as I found out when talking to Callista, Newt’s wife. But, that’s another subject.

And, I know Sarah speaks to Rush (Sarah has even been a guest on his show). Here is Rush’s very accurate take on why Sarah endorsed Trump (Thank God for Rush):

“It doesn’t have to be a classical conservative promising this. It can be anybody who makes them trust him, anybody with credibility. So the fear is, when you get inside the Beltway, that all of the conservative institutions — in media and in think tanks, you name it. All the various components are being exposed as really unnecessary and irrelevant, and really haven’t done anything for people. One illustration of that is the reaction to Sarah Palin from the Republican establishment.

She shows up... Not the selection, but Palin showing up to endorse Trump. Everybody said, “Why in the world would she do that?” Let me ask you a simple question. “If you’re Sarah Palin, what has the Republican establishment done for you — other than try to destroy you?” The Republican establishment, they assigned people to shepherd her through the McCain campaign who ended up telling the media, “My God, this woman is so stupid, I can’t vote for McCain! The thought this woman might become president? Oh, my God, I can’t!”

HBO made a movie out of it. So if you’re Sarah Palin, you might ask, you’re asking me why I’m endorsing Trump? Why don’t you ask me what has the so-called conservative Republican Party done for me. Tea Party’s a different thing, obviously. So the Trump triumph, the Trump coalition is exposing the fact that it isn’t conservative orthodoxy, or conservatism or any of the hard work of the conservative elite in persuading people and educating them and informing them that is causing people to be conservative.

No, it’s something really basic and simple. They are fed up with the modern-day Democrat Party. They’re fed up with Obama and all of these people who have set out to transform, which means destroy, this country and rebuild it in ways it was never founded to be or intended to be. They want it stopped. They’ve shown up at the polls twice, 2010, 2014, to get them to stop.

The Republican Party establishment does not understand this. They do not know who their conservative voters are. They’ve overestimated their conservatism, and by that is meant they think they’re dyed-in-the-wool conservative theoreticians absorbed in such things as the free market and all these other bells and whistles, and they’re not. They’re not liberal. They’re not Democrat. Many of them do not want to be thought of as conservatives, for a host of reasons. So somebody who comes along and is able to convey that he or she understands why they’re angry and furthermore is gonna do everything they can to fix it, is gonna own them.

So what’s happening here, nationalism, dirty word, ooh, people hate it, populism, even dirtier word. Nationalism and populism have overtaken conservatism in terms of appeal. And when this has happened, when it exposes — what people in Washington are afraid of — and that that is, you know, all this money we’ve asked people to send us and all these donations people have made, this movement, promote that movement, where is conservatism in Washington, they’re asking. Where is it? The Republican Party isn’t conservative. Where are all these conservative people that are contributing to policy being implemented in Congress or in the Senate. They don’t see it.”

Americans, conservative, libertarian and the wide political spectrum are tired of the interest groups, taking our money and giving back only lip service. The Clinton Foundation is an example of it, on steroids. Trump is showing how irrelevant they are and how relevant he is in America’s destiny to “Make America great again.”

Being a long time conservative, I have always loved Sarah Palin. I even had her photo on my desktop a month before she was selected by John McCain. I have read Sarah’s books and, through the years, I’ve been on the Sarah Palin ping list. I know her as a dear sister for a Free Republic. I recommend people read her writings, because you will be reading that historical stuff historians will use to document the rebirth of America. Sarah Palin is a true American patriot and we are blessed to have her.

“Now it is PC to denounce someone who makes fun of a human being who was born deformed.”

That “deformed” reporter you’re defending is Serge Kovaleski, a slimy, neo-fascist propagandist for the New York Times. Kovaleski traveled to Alaska and wrote demeaning articles about Sarah Palin. He’s part of the cabal that mocked Palin’s Down syndrome child Trig.

These same pigs mocked Sen. McCain and the disabilities he now suffers as a result of his imprisonment while a POW in Vietnam.

You’re skating on thin ice by defending this Goebbel’s propagandist, boy.

Trump DID attack him for his article.

Your talking points might not have referenced that particular fact.
