Uprising in the Rust Belt: They used to be Democrats. Now they could hand Trump the White House
Politico Magazine ^ | June 24, 2016 | Keith O'Brien

CAMBRIA COUNTY, Pa.—Donald Trump’s road to the White House begins here: on a four-lane highway, just east of Pittsburgh, past the roadside taverns, burned-out gas stations, and parking lots choked with weeds, up into the dark fingers of the Allegheny Mountains, and then down into the valley that was once home to steelworkers, coal miners and party-line Democrats.

Regis Karlheim once counted himself among that third group. A farmer’s son, Karlheim grew up doing two things: voting Democratic and growing potatoes. “It was a lot of good years in potatoes,” he said. “Everybody and their brother grew potatoes in Cambria County.”

Today Karlheim—blue-eyed, 58, and graying around the temples—spends his days behind the wheel of a giant coal truck, but the declining coal industry has hit Karlheim hard. He’s making $10,000 less than he was just three years ago, he said, and he’s worried about his mortgage. “How do you make those payments?” he asked. This spring, after years of not voting for anyone, in either party, in any presidential election, his anxiety compelled him to cast a vote in the Democratic primary. For Bernie Sanders.

His vote helped the socialist from Vermont beat Hillary Clinton in the county —while Trump won big, claiming more votes than either Democratic candidate. Since then, Clinton has sewn up her party’s nomination, but recent polls show that Cambria’s primary was no fluke: among the crucial battleground states, Pennsylvania is a tossup. Who wins the state’s precious 20 electoral votes in November will depend, in part, on people like Karlheim.

And he has some bad news for the former secretary of state....

This guy is out in front of the grocery store and he sees a kid with a box of kittens and sign that says “Democrat kittens”. The guy goes and looks at the kittens, plays with them but he doesn’t need a cat and he goes on his way. The next day he goes to the store and sees the same kid, same box of kittens, but now the sign says “Republican kittens”. He asks the kid what happened to the Democrat kittens from yesterday. The kid says “there eyes opened up”.

Sooner or later all the Democrats constituencies will realize how badly the party elite is screwing them over.

I think given the increasingly BAD revelations about Hillary Clinton's private email server, I have this feeling that the Democrats are (in private!) wanting Hillary Clinton to lose so they can get rid of the stain that is the Clinton Crime Family. Besides, by 2020, there will be really viable Democratic candidates for a change: the Castro brothers from Texas and possibly Gavin Newsom from California.

NY maybe, CA, no way. I think Trump could take MI, PA, WI, NJ and IA away from from Hillary.

I occasionally play golf in Johnston CC and then go "downtown" to eat at a local tavern and talk with the locals.

There is an 80% approval rating for Trump in a town full of demonRATs. I was there in early June, and could not believe what the people were saying, they were even bad mouthing the local hero, congresscritter John Murphy.

Murphy, a Marine and Vietnam Vet {my brother in law was a Marine sniper and loved the crooked Murph}, became a lifetime congress critter, and stole more money than Al Capone.

Like Big Al, Murphy, spread the stolen cash {MILLIONS IN TAX FREE GRAFT} all around Johnstown, and the locals loved his crooked ass {free money}.

The entire region will go for Trump, and by a 2-1 number.

hildabutchbitch will get drowned in the Johnstown flood of November 8, 2016.

What I found interesting was the doubt about how the affluent suburbs of Philly would vote.

Well I live there and Trump is very popular. Even with some folks from the city.

PA really comes down to Philly, will they be able to stuff the ballot boxes or not.

Especially if sold- out crooked Hillary is the D nominee, mr trump can certainly carry New York and California. But he wil have to do three things -/ spend to match Hillary’s two billion dollar Islamic etc campaign warchest, deploy lots of trained poll watchers to reduce her voter fraud , and keep emphasizing he’s for cleaning up the corruption ( his one big issue that’s attractive to honest D voters and many Bernie followers).

As a long time poll watcher, I guarantee you that the demonRATs will pull voter fraud.

The real question is how much ground do they have to make up, based on the real turn out.

I am afraid you are correct.

People cannot understand what our workforce is competing with.

China and Mexico will always have cheaper labor for a few reasons. First, they don’t care about their workers. They’ll ring as much out of them as they can for the lowest cost. Second, they don’t give two shakes about the environment.

Now nobody here wants to see rivers running with garbage, poison, and dead fish, but we would like some common sense.

Here’s the example that best sticks out in my mind.

For years, Texas had been planning a major highway project and they’d finally jumped through all the hoops. Construction began in the spring. There was a very real sense of relief as the construction workers *finally* got some work. Things clipped along nicely for a month or two-

And then someone saw a spider.

Turns out that it was an endangered spider. They shut the entire project down for months while the enviro morons combed through the scrub brush, looking for more spiders. In the end, they had to reroute part of the highway - at the cost of a ton of money and lost man-hours.

Who thinks that this *ever* would’ve happened in China?

We all know about the stupid owl that shut down our logging industry. Farms that went dry and out of business because somebody in the EPA decided that a fish needed the water more than the farms.

Let’s not forget the jobs lost with Obamacare. I read an article last year that showed that, although the workers haven’t had a raise in more than a decade, the companies were paying twice as much for each worker. So the companies are spending the money on labor, but it’s not making it into the workers’ pockets.

We can be competitive with China, India, and Mexico. We can do so and treat our labor force well. But we’ve got to get the Fed off our backs. We’ve got to rein in the EPA.

And we’ve got to demand that China, Mexico, and India apply some standards to their own factories. We can do this with trade deals.

The only Rust Belt States, I think Hillary has ANY shot at are the following:

MN, because well its MN.

WI, because the GOPe poisoned that state with their nevertrump nonsense during the primaries.. so that one may be lost because of that.

IL - Chicago has a lot of scandals going on right now.. even for Chicago around Emanuel etc... This MIGHT cause enough outrage that Chicago may not overwhelm the rest of the state... Trump may surprise here.. but Hillary certainly has a chance.

That’s it... I see no way Hillary takes PA, OH, IN or MI... WI should be in that group, but again, give the GOPe poisoning the populace there during the primary, hard to say at this point if Trump will have a shot there.

Trump may pull out wins in IL, WI or MN as well, I would not be surprised if he did pull some if not all of them out in Nov, but I just see no way Hillary plays at all in the others.
