Democratic presidential hopeful Wesley Clark didn’t show up at his recent Washington fundraiser, though enough of his supporters did to make it interesting. Former Clinton White House adviser Rep. Rahm Emanuel (D-Ill.) was there. So was surprise guest former D.C. Mayor Marion Barry (D).
The event was organized by Mora Segal, daughter of Eli Segal, Clark’s new campaign chairman. Like most Clark gatherings, the atmospherics were distinctly Clintonian, right down to a couple of kissing gay guys.
Segal, past director of AmeriCorps, is just one of several top Clintonites involved in Clark’s campaign. Richard Sklar, Clinton’s ambassador to the United Nations in 1997, is the campaign’s chief operating officer, while Mickey Kantor, former secretary of commerce and U.S. trade representative, is chairman of Clark’s steering committee.
Is the sudden appearance of so many Clinton loyalists just a coincidence? Or, as some contend, is it part of a so-called “Bubba offense” managed by the former president to (a) head off rival Democratic candidate Howard Dean; (b) preserve control of the Democratic National Committee, through DNC Chairman Terry McAuliffe, for the Clintons; and (c) promote Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.), should she become Clark’s running mate or make her own run for the White House in 2008?
“That’s a pretty far stretch,” said Ron Lader, former ambassador to Great Britain under Clinton and “not presently involved” in the Clark campaign. But repeating what’s become a Clinton inner-circle mantra, Lader insisted the retired NATO commander would make “a terrific president.”
