Supporters of extending driving privileges to the more than 50,000 illegal immigrants in Maryland have hit the driving public with a one-two punch: Attorney General Joseph Curran issued an advisory opinion, made public this week, declaring that "an applicant's inability to prove lawful residence in the United States is not itself grounds for denial of a license." Also, Mr. Curran maintains that the state Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) "may not deny a license to an individual because he or she is unable to prove lawful presence in this country."

Now what harm would a driver's license to an ILLEGAL cause? Hmmmm....

A nation reflects the joint element of sanity and common sense of the citizens. When they no longer care about truth and the enforcement of laws that govern them, their demise as a nation is not far behind. With each illegal alien that is absorbed into our society, our nation becomes that much more unable to reach a consensus and ability to govern itself.

Bob Ehrlich should take a look at the election results in liberal, Democratic California. People don't want drivers' licenses to be offered to be people who are in this country illegally, period.

Good point!

This whole situation is of the Government's making.
Apparently there are many 'undocumented' workers who are not able to get any action from INS for years at a time, and so the police, etc are all being told to treat every one as a welcome guest. It is sickening, and comes from the same govt that brought us the antiAmerican State Dept.

I travel frequently in the U.S. and other countries. If I plan to drive in any "foreign" country, I make sure I carry my International Driver's Permit with me. The permit allows me to drive legally, but gives me no right to vote in the country I am visiting--why should it? I use my passport, not my driver's license, for identification purposes.

Does not the U.S. have a system for allowing "foreigners" to drive legally without giving them de-facto citizenship? Perhaps it should have.

It's beginning to look like every state in the union is hot to introduce similar measures. If it's purely a vote-getting scheme, the Republicans are idiots to go along with it so willingly. These people vote Democrat overwhelmingly.

What's the real agenda here? More bodies to fund Social Security for boomers? What??

In this part of the country, Mexicans can drive legally with their own Mexican drivers licenses. Just like when I go to Mexico, they don't hand me a drivers license, I can use my regular one. Giving them drivers licenses has other purposes obviously.

I think others should go ahead and start taking advantage of the system --- if you do not need to be a legal resident of a state to get a drivers license ---- then we all should. You get in-state rates on hunting licenses, fishing licenses, college tuition and the rest. I've known of a couple Americans who did just this to get cheap hunting licenses ---- because all they ask is a drivers license and if you have the right one, you don't need to pay out-of-state rates.

Our government is protecting the corrupt Mexican government leaders for some reason. Whatever Vicente Fox demands, we give it ---- we seem to want to keep them very happy, or at least in power.

So maybe it's cheaper to do it this way than deal with a possible armed rebellion in Mexico?

Just thinking out loud. Really, I haven't the faintest idea what the motivation is. I only know that it all reeks to high heaven.

It might be money. There is a lot of oil in Mexico and a lot of money. Or we think the oligarchy in Mexico is better than what would replace them even if things just get worse and worse under them. Or maybe it's like throwing money at problems ---- we think that solves everything.

The greatest boon for Mexico would be controlling the border and deporting as many illegals back as possible. Without the US "safety valve" Mexicans would have to impliment real reforms, making them a better neighbor for us and a country worth staying in for them. Current policy only supports their evil government. How can we free the people of Iraq and reshape it into a representative democracy while allowing corrupt business-as-usual directly south of us? It reeks of hypocrisy.
Call it tough love, compassionate coservative, just do it.
