Israel's weariness and isolation from the three-year battle against Palestinian terrorists makes the support from Christians more important than ever.
CBN.com JERUSALEM -- This week, Jews around the world are celebrating the feast of tabernacles. Thousands of Christian pilgrims are in Jerusalem for a celebration of the feast, and they heard from some of Israel's highest leaders. Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon addressed more than 3,000 Christians at the opening celebration of the Feast of Tabernacles.
Sharon said, "You're here because your hearts and souls brought you here to the land of the Bible."
To some, the gathering, which marks one of the feasts commanded in the Bible, represents the tip of the iceberg of worldwide Christian support for Israel.
Malcolm Hedding is the executive director of the Christian Embassy, Jerusalem. He said, "When you take the proportions of the groups present here tonight, then they represent millions of Christians around the world who stand with Israel and are prepared to come here and express their love and support for this people at this time."
The address by Ariel Sharon comes at a difficult time for the nation of Israel, with the continued threat of terror attacks, increased tension on the northern border with Syria and the apparent failure of the road map peace plan.
Israel's weariness and isolation from the three-year battle against Palestinian terrorists makes the support from Christians more important than ever.
Michael Utterback is the international director of the International Christian Embassy, Jerusalem. He said, 'The Israelis have never been in the situation they are in since the founding of the country; where they just feel hopeless, where they feel everyone has turned against them. And yet, it's been stated over and over against in the last three years where the evangelical Christians of the world are our best friends."
Rannan Gissan, spokesman for the prime minister, said, "We don't have many friends around us in the world. It gets quite lonely there. And when you're at the head of the column, you always want the soldiers to tap you on the helmet to know someone is behind you. Your coming here is tapping on the helmets of all the Israelis who are standing in the front lines for freedom, for prosperity, for western society."
A sentiment Sharon echoed to the crowd. He said, "Thank you so much for coming here and showing solidarity. Your presence sends a strong message to the world and your friendship is important to us. Very important."
Important because the State Department is urging travel restrictions for Americans to Israel. *snicker* Yeah, right.
