[history]
TEHRAN Iran will suspend uranium enrichment and allow spot checks of its nuclear program, as sought by the U.N. nuclear watchdog agency, a senior Iranian official said Tuesday after three European foreign ministers came to Tehran to press their case. Iran set no date for the steps.
Iran faces an Oct. 31 deadline, set by the International Atomic Energy Agency, to prove its does not have a nuclear weapons program as the United States alleges. Otherwise, the IAEA will likely turn to the U.N. Security Council, which could impose sanctions.

"It is an important day for Europe because we are dealing here with a major issue. We are talking about proliferation, which as everyone knows, is a huge challenge to the world community," de Villepin told reporters. Ok there Froggy...what about those weapons found in Iraq that were date stamped within the last 5 years? How important is it again?

Dictators now understand that we have a President that means it when he says "disarm or face the consequences"

Trust, but verify. We forgot the "verify" part with North Korea, and look where they are now.

He added that for an "interim period," Iran will suspend nuclear enrichment "to express its goodwill and create a new atmosphere of trust and confidence between Iran and the international community." "Since the Great Satan moved in next door, we hear so many ominous noises, the booms in the night, this familiar voice saying the word eeeevillll, why, we are so very afraid. We will behave now."

It's a wonder that Freepers apparently believe them.

I find the timing troubling. Seems like they are trying to get hands clean while it's fresh in everyone's mind. If something happens to confirm the moon worshipper's prophecy of world altering events and the ushering of the 12th Iman, the Iranians will look like they were moderating at precisely the right time. Seems like they are trying to get right in a hurry.

This declaration was valid for approximately one half hour.
I'm not optimistic about words spilling from evil lips...

I don't believe them. It will come down to verification, and I think they will play the same old games we are used to with other wannabe nuclear powers. Time will tell.

Russia could be advising Iran to co-op...put things off off another 4 years.
Besides...Shihab whatever has too many bugs to work out still.
Iran *needs to modernize her military...who will she be purchasing toys from.
Maybe Iran will get some nice SU 30 MKI's like India... hard for the U.S. to say no to an existing foreign sales .
Anyhoo...Iran needs new toys,is there a reward for Pooty in this ?

I don't believe a word they say, and there really is no way to verify if someone wants to hide a weapons system. Iran is trying to provoke us into a war.

This is nothing more than a temporary ploy.
There is a tremendous difference between suspend and END
We are dealing with Islamists who have no problem making convenient treaties with "infidels" which they will in turn break at a later date when circumstances are in their favor (i.e. there is a weak, inept, democrat sitting in the White House, who is no friend of Israel or the United States).

Agree. This is mere windowdressing ahead of the 10/31 deadline. They have learned well from Sadaam and Kim to draw out diplomacy forever, all the while continuing their programs.
France and Germany drug the British to Tehran to make sure the US is isolated on 11/1. The notion that de Villepin is willing to isolate Tehran is laughable.
