ORMOND BEACH, Fla. (AP) - A sport utility vehicle ran over a sunbather on the beach, seriously injuring the woman, authorities said.
Glenda Willits, 52, of Ormond Beach, was pinned under the front of the car after it backed into her Wednesday, said Deputy Chief Mike Hensler of the Volusia County Beach Patrol.
Willits was listed in serious condition Thursday in the Halifax Medical Center with injuries to her hip and shoulder.
The driver, a 30-year-old woman whose name was not released, apparently didn't see Willits, Hensler said.
Investigators were trying to determine whether to file charges.
Cars are allowed on many Florida beaches, including Ormond Beach.
In February, a police officer drove over two sisters on Miami's South Beach, killing one and injuring the other. The officer was not charged, but the women's family sued the city for negligence.

Don't you just hate it when those SUV's start running on the beach. You never know who they will step on.

It's a good thing that the driver escaped before the SUV decided to go on another rampage. It could have been a very series incident.

While the driver was at fault, not the SUV, it doesn't help that they let must anyone drive those things. A lot of SUV drivers seem to think they are in a Cooper Mini by the way they drive.

it doesn't help that they let must anyone drive those things A very high percentage of Americans shouldn't be allowed to drive. What they drive is thier own business.

Another story from the axis of evil SUV's.
We need another cabinet level gummint department to regulate these 'automobiles of peace', aka SUV's.

If people would just start using "Coppertone SUV Blocker #100" these things could be avoided :-)

I am glad I don't own an SUV, seems like they are always running over people and getting into accidents.

A very high percentage of Americans shouldn't be allowed to drive. What they drive is thier own business. Unless they are on a private road, if they can't handle what they are driving, it is everyone else on the road with them's business. I don't care if people drive SUVs. I just want them to know how to drive what they are driving.

This has happened before; the latest case I remember happened in South Beach, the trendy area of Miami Beach.
The cops was yakking on his cell phone and did not pay attention to this surroundings, but the cop found a judge who said that cops cannot be charged with negligence while conducting their duty, no matter how negligent they are.
The judge dismissed the case against the cop.

pinned under the front of the car after it backed into her Wednesday uhhh... something tells me you'd get stuck under the rear differential before you'd get pinned in the front...
Just wondering...

I never did like vehicles on beaches. Then again, there always were guys who were more turned on by a hot car than a hot girl.
It was fun watching the tide come in and swallow up vehicles whose owners think tide is just a laundry detergent.
