Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia ridiculed his court's recent ruling legalizing gay sex, telling an audience of conservative activists Thursday that the ruling ignores the Constitution in favor of a modern, liberal sensibility.

The ruling, Scalia said, "held to be a constitutional right what had been a criminal offense at the time of the founding and for nearly 200 years thereafter."

Obviously Justice Scalia would make the best candidate for Chief Justice. The 2004 election is so critical for turning out the conservative base, simply because Bush should have several oppurtunities to nominate new justices.

The issue regarding sexual orientation is based on the argument that, "we're made that way." Because they've been successful in that argument and because many people believe that if that's their predisposition then their life-style, their so-called "sexual orientation" should be considered as normal and akin to something like one's ethnicity or race. That's the first mistake. Alcoholics, substance abusers, pedophiles, obese people, serial killers and who knows what in the way of various character defects can make a similar claim. And they darn well will do so. We're already witnessing it with respect to obesity. The battle which needs to be fought is to argue that just because one may claim to be "born that way" that doesn't justify or excuse their behavior. Least of all it shouldn't place them into a "protected class."

The Supreme Court cannot possibly "strip" the words "under God" from the pledge because the pledge is not a government document. The Supreme Court can only claim that reciting the pledge in a government school is a violation of the Constitution.

Boy, did I want to go to this banquet. But I had another key seminar two weeks earlier, and had to choose one or the other. ISI -- then named the Intercollegiate Society of Individualists -- was one of the first oases of scholarship and enlightenment I found amid all the leftist propaganda on campus. I'll bet I learned more from ISI's pamphlet series than I did from any regular course I took. ISI did a great job -- still does!

I attended tonight's festivities at the National Building Museum for ISI's 50th anniversary. It was a great night. I received an invitation to go (with an offer of a free ticket to attend), so I went. The best parts of the night were the speeches, the dinner, and the free books. :-)

I got the invitation, not that that was very useful when I'm 3,000 miles away :-) What were the free books? One of my favorites (and I know the ISI bookstore stocks it, or used to) is Richard Weaver's Ideas Have Consequences. If that was up for grabs, I hope you grabbed!
